1990 Turbo Auto - VOL 480T

Re: 1990 Turbo Auto - VOL 480T
Has anyone experienced this particular rattle before?
It’s coming from NSR. It started after everything was replaced/refurbed in January but he couldn’t find anything wrong when it went back for discs/pads etc in April.
It’s only apparent when driving on newly resurfaced roads or bad roads!
It’s driving me mad! (Fox’s excellent camera skills….)

Re: 1990 Turbo Auto - VOL 480T
Not really sure but there is a particular brand of rear shock absorbers that has the hole in the bush too large and causes knocking.
Did you have the rear shock absorbers replaced?
Luckily they are the easiest part of the suspension to replace if they are responsible.

Yes, I had B4s all around. Kept original springs and they were tidied and painted. This is just one area making that noise.

Re: 1990 Turbo Auto - VOL 480T
Funnily enough Bilsteins were the culprits in the past for rattling. The hole in the bush isn’t a tight fit to the bolt, hence they rattle.
If your garage can’t find anything loose and you still have the originals, you could try to get them bolted back on and see if the problem goes away.
I think I have an original set you can borrow for testing if you like.
If proven to be the rear Bilstein shocks rattling, then the solution is a custom bush or a custom shouldered bolt. The bolt will be easier to have made I’d say. Unless Jeff has an alternative idea? Sleeve maybe?

Re: 1990 Turbo Auto - VOL 480T
I understand you pain. Mine rattles with the rear brake compensator (you don’t have one, don’t worry!) now that it has the correct springs and isn’t a 4x4x480! Will have to look in to this when I get back.

Re: 1990 Turbo Auto - VOL 480T
This is very similar to mine, and yes there is a creaking noise that can be heard sub-40mph on smooth roads, I think mine does need new shocks, especially after 6 months of going over the killer speedbumps at my college...
It is almost certainly the shocks, especially if they are a bit old like mine are (definitely over 15 years in my case)

Current Jobs to do (23/1/22):
Fix Central Locking
Fix drivers side speaker
Annoying Scratching Squeak
Water leaks
Complete Front O/S rebuild

Re: 1990 Turbo Auto - VOL 480T
On watching the video, this case is a bit different to mine, whereas in my case it sounds like a creaking noise of tiredness, that one sounds like something is loose, which could be a case like James said of the shock not quite fitting properly...

Re: 1990 Turbo Auto - VOL 480T
Just had a quick look on here and it seems “glasgowjim” had this issue with Bilsteins and fixed it with a washer— this implies the unwanted movement is along the length of the bolt, not around the diameter as suggested by me above.

I seem to remember “frenchfries” had the problem too but can’t see any posts about it.
Keep all options open… I’m just speculating!

New name for the old boy
Re: the rattle, I'm going to do what all fed up 480ers do. "I'm taking it to Jeff". Hopefully he'll find it. But those MK roads are a bit fancy and smooth.
I've booked in at another show this weekend (Grimesthorpe Castle) as the Cleethorpes one was called off. So, he'll get a nice outing finally. Hopefully it won't be full-on rain but ......probably will be!

Re: 1990 Turbo Auto - VOL 480T
Up at 5:30am today to go to Baston Car and Bike Show at Grimsthorpe Castle.
Much more of a free for all instead of just a classics show which I think worked well and there was plenty to see. It did rain mid morning but it soon cleared up.
As usual, I only had one person chat to me for about 5 seconds. I did do a write-up about the car, the club and the rescues.
Only 2 other Volvos I saw: a very new estate and a pick-up 90s estate.

Re: 1990 Turbo Auto - VOL 480T
The rattle needed more checking out. It was driving me mad. So, off the the 480 sanctuary it was.
Here's poor Jeff having to take it all apart after a test run to show him the noise.
We think we finally found it......
It's the NSR seat! Honestly, it's like the time my V40's wheel was falling off and I assumed that had to be suspension too! Not just a loose wheel nut/s (from collection of sellers garage I might add!).
Jeff sat in the rear to get closer to the noise and it stopped, so he folded it down....and it stopped. Let this be a lesson to us all.
Another 'dash out' session. Correct bulb in the clock and sort out pins on the info centre which had come loose and we're back in business.
Of course, robot lunch.
I did mention to Jeff 'change of power steering fluid, should I?' ....turns out, yes.
Thank you once again, Jeff!
Oooh, also, we had another visitor....I'd love to be a fly on Jeff's neighbours' walls.

Re: 1990 Turbo Auto - VOL 480T
Rear seat back rattling in its slot.
Had this in my first 480 - as you describe, it took a lot if finding!!
I cured it with a small bit if foam rubber squidged into ot, but wrapping some tape round the lug that sticks out into the slot might work...

Re: 1990 Turbo Auto - VOL 480T
I’ve already wrapped the pin, I’m having the panel out next time!
Re: 1990 Turbo Auto - VOL 480T
Unfortunately, the relief was short lived. It needs that panel off and whatever is loose sorting out. It's the metal parts that hold the seat back pin in place that are jiggling or something in and around that assembly!
Re: 1990 Turbo Auto - VOL 480T
Got him out today and gave him a quick clean to pop along the the Lincolnshire Louth Motor Club's show at the Lincolnshire Wolds Railway. Fox went on the steam train and a few good people came to chat.
Re: 1990 Turbo Auto - VOL 480T
Well, you wait for a bus and two come along at once, as they say.
I’m hoping to also sell the C30 now too and get rid of all debts and have a single cab pick up as the daily (I miss the use of lugging space!). So, yesterday, whilst perusing the P100s (I’d always wanted a P100 since working in a riding school in the early 90s and we had a cortina one) I came across one (the newer Sierra one) not far from me but it had had a larger engine dropped in for sale with a trader. It was up for less than I had the 480 up for so I though, if you don’t ask, you’ll never know. I asked if they fancied a straight swap as that would very probably kick up issues in time as it’s been off the road (but recommissioned) and we know how that goes as you start to use it again….! and I expect they’d be able to ask more for my 480.
They actually responded this morning asking me to call. I would have been rather excited if it were not for the fact that later last night I had a second call from a gentleman who was really interested in the 480 and made an offer I was happy to accept.
The gentleman has an auto turbo already and sounded very genuine. He’s 81 and says it’ll be his last car that will probably be passed onto his grandson. So, it seems it would be going to an enthusiast home. Due to advancing years I have offered to take it to him for him to look at. He’s already gathering his finances so hopefully it’ll be a good new home if it goes there.
I’ll report back if I come to the end of this thread……

Re: 1990 Turbo Auto - VOL 480T
Good news all round then Edie, at least as far as the debt clearance is concerned. Just wondering what your prospective buyer intends to do with his current one ? Maybe that's earmarked for his grandson as well.
We will be very sorry to lose you but hopefully it won't be too long before you are back in the fold with another 480. M eanwhile if you fancy coming along to meetings to catch up in person, please do. I'm sure you will still be on the forum from time to time.
