I've got a 740 estate which shares most of its parts. A great car to drive as it is SO comfortable. No bumps felt at all. good visibility and easy to park for a big car. Can also have fun with the rear wheel drive on wet roundabouts. The boot is huge and if you drop the rear seats (that fold completely flat) you get a massive space you can fit a single mattress in with space for all your gear at the side!
I have the 2ltr which is a little underpowered in my honest opinion but is still quick enough for me and is enough to make it twitch on the wet roundabouts(did i mention i love rear wheel drive?) I would say go for the 2.3 for normal performance or the turbo for great fun! Also do a V6(2.8?) which is meant to be super smooth. Good turbo diesels too but go for the intercooler model for decent power(130bhp?) and you will get 38mpg combined.
Go for it mate. I like the look of a diesel 940 in the future but I can't justify it(I have a 480 I currently run, have to fix the problems on the missus's 480, which is mine as she has just got a new car, and am trying to sort my 740 out for an MOT in the next month or so.

The fact that they are almost the same! Engines, body's(just a slight change), share suspension set up and same interior! Justa few chaqnges to the dials! I have an owners manual for a 740 and a 940 and they are practically the same!

Hi Catgroom
the 960 is the same as 940 except for the following
different dashboard, has 850 series type dash
IRS os only on the saloon from 1992 model year. Estate never had it and stayed with the live axle
the main differents is in the engine department.
940 have the following engines
2 litre 8v na (110hp)
2 litre 8v turbo HPT (156hp)
2 litre 16v na (italy only v.rare)
2.3 litre 8v na (125hp)
2.3 litre 8v turbo LPT (137hp)
2.3 litre 8v turbo HPT (172hp) (turbo plus pack option 189hp)
2.3 litre 16v (151hp) B234 engine
2.4 D24 TIC (130hp) VW derived use in LT vans etc.
960 have just two engine options
2.5 24v striaght six (manual (m90) or auto box)
3.0 24v strriaght six (auto only)
don't think there was a diesel version
Avoid 16v engines as they are fragile due to the external belt driven oil pump. 2l.0 litre is the most ecomincal after the diesel and pulls like a train! LPG converstions on the 960 are popular.
Tubros always have 4 speed + overdrive (m45 gearbox) or later (post 1995) M90 five speed due to the torque these engines develop.
NA use the five speed m46 box which has narrower gearsets to fit five gears in the same gearbox casting so don't last as long (in volvos eyes) with bigger engines.
later one also gained smaller v90 syle front end.
regards
Mark

In 1995 the estate got - with the restyling - independent rear suspension too --> But from the beginning fitted on al saloons. Interiorpanels changed too from 1995 with better materials/upholstery --> to make it a little more distinctive.
Earlier models (uptil 95 there were only 3.0 24v-engines) are common to have broken cambelts (change regularly!) This problem was solved by more proper engineering from modelyear 1995 on.
2.5 24v is not more economical compared to the 3.0 24v and not running as smooth.
Excellent and comfortable driving in a very smooth, fast and luxurious way.

Buy a Diesel
Buy a Diesel, the 3.L 24v engine should only be considered if it has full VOLVO service history bloody expensive to fix & heads only available from VOLVO also valve seats are no longer available so even if the head is saveable u can't always get spares - head sets NLA so you have to buy individual parts !
If you buy a 1995 onwards model the rear shocks are self leveling & non self leveling was replaced to self leveling so thats £500 please SIR & are a common part to need replacing.
Buy a good one & it is a great car to drive, i've driven the 3.L model & if i could afford the petrol bill would buy one tomorrow, but only if its VOLVO DEALER SERVICED on the other hand a Diesel is as common as muck
all DSL engines from 1994 onwards are hydraulic & parts are from VAG fitted to LT's.

I used to own a 960 3.0 and the previous 2.5
Got to say the 3.0 much better than the 2.5 not all that bad on fuel consumption either.
Very comfortable on the motorway and driving in general
easy and relaxing.
however i changed it later for the V90 which is an updated 960. few changes and overal a better car than the 960 and you can pick them up 3.0 luxury edition top of the range for around £2500 now. so well worth the money in every sense.
Good luck

Ive driven the 2.5 and the 3.0. I prefer the 3.0. Not driven a manual only auto's. The 3.0 auto is actually very quick 4 its size, a gud pick up in the high revs in sports mode .

Well, I think I might be going for a new car, depending on how much I can get it for. I was looking at the 960s as I think I'm getting bored with 4 cylinders - and even if it was the diesel model, it's still a straight six
The diesels seem to have cylinder head problems if they're not looked after, although they do drive quite well and are efficient. But because of the engine issues I think I'm steering clear of those ones.
Basically, I've recently found a nice S90 which could be going cheap as it needs an MOT and Tax, and for the MOT it needs the handbrake sorting. My mechanic knows these cars very well, so I'm thinking could sort it for very little?? I know it'll drink fuel compared to the 1.7 Turbo, but it should be more reliable, shouldn't it?
If anyone else has driven them (3.0 - 204bhp models) please do post your thoughts!
Thanks, Crispin

The 700/900 diesels do drive well but cylinder head problems are common due to corrosion on the waterways in the head.
If you like the estate and want a good diesel, the 850/v70 2.5 lump is apparently very good. It's another VAG unit and they just go on and do 60 in 9 secs! I'm personally going to be chopping the Peugeot I bought in for one of these in about 6 months.......
...That is if I don't find another £4000 so I can buy an S60 D5. My mates dad has one and the engine is sublime!!!!!!!! 163BHP and it rises to 180bhp on later cars!!! Volvos first in house diesel too Just need to save!
