greasy turbo pipe

Post by alfonzobonzo » Sat Oct 22, 2005 5:25 pm

Ive had my v40 for about a year now, & for a long time now its felt a bit Lame,
also for a long time ive noticed that the only part of the engine that ever has any oil on it is the fat rubber pipe that comes directly out of the turbo, it allways seems to have a film of oil on it, I wipe it off, & it reappears.

I took it off this evening, and inside the pipe is rather dirty looking engine oil (only a couple of ml) & the exit port of the turbo looks clean on the inside.

so..
could the pipe have become porous? unlikely

is the oil just blowing out from the gap, ie jub clibs not tight enough?

is that amount of oil ok? the car drinks about 4L every 5000 miles but no blue smoke from exhast as far as i know

will post pics tonight if required, of to honiton carnival, oh yay.

:?

My V40 T4 also uses a fair bit of oil, but after numerous investigations myself and at a local specialist and we have concluded it is normal.

Can't say about the oil on the pipe though...

v70 turbo does the same. the return oil hose on a lot of turbo cars get wet (diesels too). Not really a problem

Looks like regular crank ventilation to me. Messy but for a good cause (the environment)

But this stuff also gets into your intercooler, might be a good idea to clean it out.

ah, cheers that puts my mind at rest,

I cleaned of all the oil inside and out, refitted the pipe (after checking for leeks) and seriously tightend up the jubilee clips.

car feels much better now, pickup is amazing and pipe has stayed dry, so i suspect air & oil were blowing out directly where pipe attached to turbo

:P

what should i use to clean out the intercooler? is ther propper stuff for this?

No special stuff for it. You could take out the intercooler and poor some petrol in it and flush it out a few times. Then let it dry out for a while.

But personally i wouldn't bother, its normal to have some oil in the intercooler

It is normal, its apparently called Turbo waxing. Its an amount of oil thats been heated by the turbo and leaked past seals a little which is nothing to worry about. And yes, petrol does a really good job of removing it on my 480 Turbo too!Improves the performance every time! :D
