OT: V40 engine issue

The Volvo you want to know something about isn't a 480, but you can't find the answer to your question anywhere... Well, what the heck, have a try here in this corner of Volvos friendliest community...

OT: V40 engine issue

Post by dragon » Mon Sep 12, 2005 11:35 am

OK, I'm risking being moaned at by posting here, but we seem to have allowed 440 and 460 owners to post, so I'm having a little go here too (bear in mind the V40 is the successor to the 480 - i.e. they were made on the same production line and there's a good few parts which share components (like the infocentres)...

Anyway, my car has a wierd issue - whenever you put the foot to the floor, it zooms so far, then judders violently, like a rev limit reached, or more likely the CEM is retarding the engine for a reason, if you keep your foot down, when it judders, after a second or two, the car leaps forward "through" the barrier, only to do it again moments later. For reference, an example: 3rd gear at 5000rpm is one such place it does it (redline on the T4 is 6500)...

What are the most likely things I need to be looking at? Gonna get the covers off and have a look at the sparks etc to see if they have any tell tales to tell...

OK fine, I'll remove this tonight. But in return I'm going to start deleting any thread mentioning any car other than 480s, seem a fair swap?!?!?!!?

I'll also remove any thread which rambles off topic

And simply any I dont like.

Hows that?!?!?

:P

Back on the off topic.

Does your car have the diagnostic feature? if not why not get it put on a diagnostics machine?

Nope - yesterday the engine light decided to come on permanently, but today the lights off - still struggling though. Haven't been able to look at anything yet - been pissing it down all day today... See if I can have a look tomorrow lunchtime and if not, I'll still discon the battery overnight to see what happens - then I'll have a look at the campsite

Well so far I have someone saying it's a fuelling issue, someone saying it's a wastegate issue causing the ECU to retard, I have someone saying it's rich, I think it might be throttle position sensor related...

Too many options.

One thing's for sure - fuel economy is **screwed** - nearly empty and I'll be lucky to get 240 miles from this tank, the norm is between 330 and 360!!!

I not take much notice of

Wastgate causing retarding
or throttle switch

all based on 480 owning of course.

Running rich caused by a screw sensor (temp) or exhuast sounds good to me.

Would explain the low MPG
