740

The Volvo you want to know something about isn't a 480, but you can't find the answer to your question anywhere... Well, what the heck, have a try here in this corner of Volvos friendliest community...

740

Post by Norm57 » Tue May 26, 2020 11:50 am

Hi all, am off to view a 740GLE estate tomorrow if anyone has one or had one in the past would be interested what to look out for apart from the usual stuff. It’s a 1990 2.3 auto with 70,000 odd on clock.

Many thanks.

YouTuber Matt "furiousdriving" Richardson has bought the cheapest 740 with MOT and made an entire series about how he is restoring it. Worth watching, especially the bits that deal with rust, so you know what to watch out for.

Well bit of a let down. Bodywork super, low mileage, good interior, large oil leak from front of block. Guessing oil seal so I gave it a miss .

Noooo Norm!! Don't you know oil is sooooo cheap these days, you can just keep filling it up as it lays down oily streaks around the streets of Naresborough :)

Gutted for you though - I hate it when, having got all hot and bothered about a potential trusty steed acquisition, you find that the seller forgot to mention something fundamental (which was probably a large part of their reason for sale in the first place)

Damn those untrustworthy sales-narcs :kill:

I do hope you weren't too inconvenienced by the experience (time out of day, distance travelled, expectations dashed, confidence in your fellow man/woman/perkin further dented). Ah well, I always console myself with the thought that there are well over 33 million cars on UK roads, which means that 'genuine bargain' in tip-top condition at a steal of a price is out there, perhaps even just round the next corner...(even more likely given the massive drop off in car usage in recent months).

Good luck finding your dream Volvo!

Bad luck Norm - a wasted trip like that is always such a disappointment.

Still, I am sure the right car will come along soon: there seems to still be a steady trickle of 700 and 900 series cars on the market...

Are you thinking of keeping the 480 in the boot? ;)
