760 sideways by Kristin & volviz

The Volvo you want to know something about isn't a 480, but you can't find the answer to your question anywhere... Well, what the heck, have a try here in this corner of Volvos friendliest community...

760 sideways by Kristin & volviz

Post by volviz » Wed Apr 30, 2008 6:16 pm

Now I will tell what I have been doing for the most of the winter weekends, and why 480 doesn't have 500hp jet....

.........................................

Taking a deep breath and here we go

Last year in autumn while mine red 480 was still waiting for judgement...
winter was coming rapidly... and that thought of getting something RWD grew stronger and stronger....

started to look in local trader magazines and online sales...wanted to find something cheap...rwd and hopefully with an LSD option...

BMW e30... too expensive couldn't find for less than 1,5-2K EUR

Sierras, Omegas.... too small engines, then I decided that Omega 3000 will be optimal solution..I could nowhere find it.. and then while browsing online used car sales adverts came across this....

760turbo for ~400 EUR.... called right away and asked can this car be even started, cause regular price for that kind of car in our region is 1+K EUR... and the guy answered..yes the car is +/- in good condition

aranged meeting right away... and to my surprise....I saw this:

Image

Image

Image

Then I thought..if the car wil start I will buy it... and it did

on 13.11.12 deal was held... and 760turbo found new home....
Car didn't have MOT, but we wen't threw smoothly :D
.....................

Older family members where glad about purchase..cause finally volviz has bought something that is bigger than trolley with engine.... but they didn't know the purpose.....

introduce Kristin to RWD world, as she had never slided cars tale with RWD fun and ofcourse some winter fun for me :hopping:

.......sadly winter never came..... but we wanted to go sideways......

so introducing

The car:
Image

Kristin
Image

The engine: 2,3L turbo (150hp stock)
Image

as it appeared 760 had some kind of LSD which was working till 30km/h...so quickly speedoo was disconected... and we waited for rainy days...

Image

Image

soon it was clear that suspension is shit and we need to modify the car.... than came long days sitting on www.turbobricks.com

soon first mod list was made:

double sways at the rear, performance chip etc.

Kristin trying to find ECU, so we can order right chip:

Image

Image

as we knew we will need some tires...few were found

Image

and then in one december evening accident happened one b*** didn't saw preferably sign and:

Image

damn Audi
Image

Image

after insurance checked car.... quick repair few days after...

Image

Image

Image

but on that day boost gauge install was originaly planed so:

centre console out:
Image

rifled plastic that was cutted out of VW Golf dash:

Image

ready:
Image

then few days later insurance callded- damage was calculated - 900EUR
for that money I repaired red 480 roof :hopping:

continuing.....

so first mods to the - that will transform everyday grocery getter into street sleeper

chip from www.ht-tuning.com found on turbobricks ofcourse :)

Image

fuel and ignition chips

Image

instaled only fuel chip for now:
Image

and booost.....
Image

after test the conclusion..... that shed is now going

first suspension mods...

double sways at the rear to help sliding

Image

now the front was too soft... at firs I bought diesel front springs and cutted them:

Kristin at work:

Image

Image

also instaled second rubber anti-bouncer (don't know how to call it) on the front shocks... can be seen on the left:
Image

did few test drives and then concluded that suspension is still too soft... then I wanted to put double springs at front...but at the end puted cutted springs from LandRover Defender (can't find pictures)
totaly I took apart and asambled front something like 4 times...now I can do it with eyes closed

then in one february night secret package came.....

Image

Image

Image

Image

directly from Sweden.... ENEM performance cam.... (for now it still rests on shelf)

some tire changes during trainings:

but the real problem was still the diff.... after diconecting speedo after few days LSD wasn't engaging at all...or engaged when it wanted

I tried to modify it by putting additional spacers between LSD thus making something like 100% all time engagement... that mod lasted 1hour on dry asphalt before it blew up...

rebuilded it once more.... after 1hour on dry it blew again..this time diff satelite gears gave up.... so needed some radical solution

bought used diff and.....

Image

at the front you can see some 5mm thick metal peaces

:volvo:

Image

today at 5.30AM we left the dressing room.....

P.S.
This all was done for the first time. We never ever had even properrly seen how to mix paint and things are done.. All done under the kind guidiance of google.com/search.... :-P

Well - the resume. We definitely now know a lot more about this. Couple of adviesw we can share - not to whipe the car just before the applaying paint with the paper towel, And - just in case, in the middle of the night, when the dawn is not far away, you do NOT see the anything coming out of the spray gun and think - oh, it is just the darkness, shall be seen the result in the morning - well, it is just your imagination. Believe me. Because soon you will realize, that for a period of time more than one hour you have been airbrushing the car with pure air... :freak:

off to the garage to reasamble ZE car:wave:

little update... we scipped 2nd drift event :(

but did>

after killing M46.... stronger gearbox hunt began. As in my country there were very little chance to get M90 or BMW getrag... I asked help from neighbour countries Finland, Sweden, Estonia, Lithuania etc.

We had only one week till race, witch we hoped to attend.

So while waiting answers from neighbour countries, went threw local adverts once more and found one redblock M90 in unknown condition......it was from a crushed car so went to see it...

Image

shifters arm was broken and few craks at rear mount..... gearbox costed $110 checked that gears seemed to shift nicely..bought it right away

and took it home...which one to choose?

Image

quick fix for shifter:

Image

previously thought that biggest problem will be qearbox... but with 4days till race... there I wasn't able to find cluch disk....and in my country there are no 940TDI with 228mm and 20spinles.. at least none of parts dealers could find in their books.... so I managed to get cluch disk from 850GLT

Image

costed $100 same as gearbox:rofl:

When I thought that all problems are gone....next one striked... as I needed longer cardan (linkage from gearbox to rear end) and ofcourse none was availible in junkyards.. I gave it to shop who promised to lenghten original from M46 setup. And they didn't.... 3days and they did nothing.... it was thursday ... registration for race on Saturtday evening....

took cardan home and with friends lenghtened ourselves....

friday...

Image

Image

open hood evening...

Image

After some time car was asambled and ......ready to go?...... nope....hidraulic system for clutch is next step.... pumped all air out...... test... and - NOTHING hydraulic system was working but it was not able to press out cluch.......

It was friday evening..... when I was reading printed out M90 writeup once more... an I found sentence witch made me almost cry:
................................
adjusting cluch:

.............Because if the clutch fork is not in the right angle, the following things will happen:

* The clutch fork will touch the gearbox before it is fully disengaged.

* The clutch for will get far away from the slave cylinder, and the piston in the slave cylinder will pop out. If it doesn't, it will still have the wrong angle.

If the test isn't done before final assambling..you will need to take gearbox off.....

................................

So I drove home to get some sleep and reset brain..... in next morning we decided not to pull gearbox off....but....... flex bigger hole in gearbox, to make fork's adjustment possible without removing box.....

Saturday ...noon.... test drive.... car is going.... cardan didn't came in cars cockpit, and vibrations are more from wheels than cardan itself.....

in evening took car to track for test before race registration.... lack of training, very technical track... and after 4 testlaps...Kristin said that she will not compeat in race...

I said..that I will try car in track and the we decide what to do..... wen't out and in first lap cluch cilinder blew out gasket....

towed car home...
Image

Image

watched race from pitline.....and on monday car was ready again... wen't to same track for test and..... gearbox was doing fine.... but something wrong with engine... at 0.9bars it cuts off... but that is next paragraph
