Octane of fuel again

Here you can talk about the joy owning a Volvo 480 brings. Non-technical discussions take place here, like what is the difference between an ES and a S version.

Octane of fuel again

Post by TLindley » Sat Mar 04, 2006 6:43 pm

When i went to Tesco's today, i noticed that their super unleaded is supposedly 99 ron. Ive never really bothered to check as i always use optimax, but what is super unleaded supposed to be? I always thought

unleaded=95
super=97
optimax=99

Noticed that other fuel companies are now starting to follow the trend,
BP have Ultimate and Texaco have Supreme.

But ive also read in many places, and i know we had a thread on it a while back, that supermarket petrol is effectively shite. Anyone been using this?

I wonder why britain gets all the high octane stuff? Apparently normal unleaded in the US is more like 90 ron.

90 Ron in America Probably makes the cars less efficient so they have to purchase more! It's the same reason that diesel is not popular in america. it is more efficient than petrol and you can get similar performance so all the oil companys sell really crappy unfiltered diesel in america which makes the engines run shit so the car buyers have to stick to petrol which is less economic and therefore they have to spend more. See februarys topgear as Clarkson has good old rant about it all!

Info on fuel types and RON numbers and stuff here on Petrolprices.com . Which is btw a good (and free) way to see if you're paying the lowest possible price for your fuel in your neighbourhood :) It also mentions Tesco's uberhigh RON super.

avgas will be ok for a little while....we used to run drag cars on it all the time. Basically it was the same block and injectors etc, so cant see it doing much damage to a bog standard?

didnt jamo or lee put up the high octane fuel recipe once?
if youre interested search for it......

Might be 99 ron, but in performance ford they tested loads of high ron pump fuel. Optimax was the best, they tested it on a 521 bhp sierra cosworth (thats with 95 ron).

The Tesco's stuff was not much better ran like 10 bhp more with a bit of ignition advancment.

But out of all the ones tested Optimax was best the ran it with a bit more ignition advancment (again) but the power was 547 bhp.

I would say thats pretty conclusive.

I you go to japan there pump fuel is like 100 ron thats why you should not run imports on anything less than super unleaded!

My XR4i was never converted to unleaded so i used additives. But i found a coulpe of garages who still sold 4 star* which is 100-101 ron. The car felt like 1000000% better only disadvantage was it was £110 per litre!

(*government lets some garages sell 4 star to keep classic car nuts happy)

I believe Britain and Australia and New Zealand are the only ones with Optimax, but i might be wrong. Sure that they dont have it in the US.

optimax is 98 ron always, the reason optimax is different is because the mon rating changes dependant on the batch

and all super unleaded petrol is just normal petrol with additives

what makes good petrol is the difference between the ron and mon rating

ron is bit like bhp and mon like torque, people only seem interested in the bhp when torque is very important.
