Heatshields

Here you can talk about the joy owning a Volvo 480 brings. Non-technical discussions take place here, like what is the difference between an ES and a S version.

Heatshields

Anyone know if running without a heatshield is going to melt the stuff it protects? The rivets snapped off and now the heatshield is no more...

Mines been rattling like a tin can lately. Friendly volv specialist took it off last week - said it wasn't needed.

No problems so far!

I too have "lightened" my Turbo by mullering the one under the brake fluid reservoir whilst fitting a new brake pipe when the ABS/TRACS replacement unit went in!

It was the one near the cat - it was barely holding on in the first place, it only had two rivets in so it came off pretty easily.

Got the same problem, the heat shield above the cat is barely held on, and is rattling and banging like a good 'un. Anyone tried removing this and running the car for any length of time.

If it's best to keep it on, any ideas on how to re-attach it, is it a case of drilling out the old rivets and redoing it, or is there a "bodge" that will hold?

Well drilling ou the rivets and replacing them isn't exactly going to take very long is it?
Thats what I'd do.

Ah, but I'm technically incompetent! I'm guessing that it will also entail taking the carpets out to ensure that I dont drill through them?

they are jst pop rivets, you only need to drill the top off them and they will fall off, whats left push through. Then put some new pop rivets in place, all done under the car.
Theres plenty of soundproofing foam under the carpets, you'd have to try hard to go right through...only problem would be if you caught a wire....

Put the heat sheild on!

Post by sr480t » Thu Jan 26, 2006 1:34 pm

My mechanic forgot to put it back on, and one weekend of racing (obviously turbo getting red hot) it f*cked up the starter motor up good and proper!!!!! If the starter motor is still ok then you either drive quiet sensibly or very lucky.

Seems most logical answer, car manafactuers are notorious for cost cutting so don't think they would put on parts that were not needed. Look what happened when Nasa cut costs with their heatshielding..... Better safe then sorry huh?

Remember hearing Ford had a cost cutting review and found that if they reduced the number of spot welds by even a couple a car, they would save something like £100k pa. So if you look at the number of spot welds on an early Fiesta (around the enginebay/frontwing area) and a later one you'll see it's true (think it's 6less in that area alone).

Deff. keep the heat shield around the starter motor - thats one already dodgy component that doesn't need any more grief!

I don't have a heat sheild on my cat, but I do remember reading an article about Cats when they were still new, and thoughts of a regulation forcing them to be shielded to prevent fires when you park up on grass etc... the reg. was dropped and replaced by a warning in the manual. <cost vs risk vs redesign\recall>

Could another spin-off of this worry be the "missing" light on the dash that looks like pipe with "heat" coming off it?
