fuel econ & cold weather

Here you can talk about the joy owning a Volvo 480 brings. Non-technical discussions take place here, like what is the difference between an ES and a S version.

fuel econ & cold weather

Post by Lee666 » Thu Dec 08, 2005 11:26 am

Ever since the weather has turned really cold my fuel economy has been complete shite, sitting in idle(around 950-1000rpm) is beyond a joke, even got out at one point to check for a leak!!!
Any ideas?

When the engine is cold it generally needs more fuel so the ECU will do this, when the engine is warmed up a sensor tell the ecu it reached operating temp and it will adjust the fueling.

Well thats what happens on my XR3i. The sensor was bust and it messed up the fueling!!!!

So i guess the same thing might be happening on your 480?

I drove home last night...70 miles. Fuel use was bang on normal. Perfomance was up...2degrees and light fog were obviously working wonders on my IC.

Yep my Turbo has been going miles better today on same fuel, same load.

Overtaking on boost has been much more ermmm, brisk shall we say!

Nice one Rich! ;) :D

By the way,at this time of year,we also get more fuel in our tanks because less evaporates between the petrol pump and the car on delivery.Added to which, the air is more densus!Haha!

when the engine is cold, fuel economy is about 30, once it warms up though its more like 35.

on a long run, say to hungary for example, its more like 40

i wouldnt worry about it.

i miss the cold weather boost fun, My MR2 has an inlet air temp sensor and the eco cuts the boost by 3 psi when the weather is cold, apparently so you get the same power output regardless of the weather!

Cold dense air make the 480 feel sooooooooo much more responsive.

Disable that feature immediately!
yeah, you just unplug a wee pipe but that also disables the boost gauge and fuel cut and all the other ecu safey features

i dont wanna be pushing it in the cold anyway, i had it fully sideways this morning leaving braehead car park, i wasnt pushing it and it wasnt even on boost, it can be a bit scary sometimes!

Yup - I get the same - Greta idles around 950-1100 as she warms the engine up (usually for the first 5mins of the drive or the engine water temp stops reading "COLD") and guzzles 98RON like Ulrika Johnson downs pints, but then settles down to her standard levels of frugality... and enjoys the cold air purring through the Pipercross which deminishes her standard levels of frugality :)
