Oh hell no, that key didnt just snap in the ignition

Here you can talk about the joy owning a Volvo 480 brings. Non-technical discussions take place here, like what is the difference between an ES and a S version.

Oh hell no, that key didnt just snap in the ignition

Post by fatbob93 » Fri Oct 28, 2005 6:30 am

yep thats right was in work last night on my break, just about to go back in turn the key in the ignition and pulled ut what i thought to be the whole key. but it had snapped off in the ignition barrel. just wondered if anyone had any ideas of how i can sort it out. i`ve got 2 spare keys, but i would rather try and do the work myself cant really afford to replace things. does anyone know how i can strip down the ingnition the get the key out with out to much damage?

Brian If you have a set of 'watchmakers' screwdrivers file the two smallest into points(some sets already have a pointed one). You will need to dig the points in somewhere (either side or top and bottom, where ever you can get to)in the key to get a bite and then try to lever it out slowly, you may only pull it out millimetres at a time and it may take a while but it should work eventually.

Well Brian, hope you get that bit out- otherwise it's ignition barrel replacement time. :(

This is on a 480 isn't it?

put a supper attack on the top of the part in your hand and put it in the lock again, so both parts glue together. be carefull you don't glue any lock pins, or you'll definatly have a lock change!

Actually, the ignition barrel will not come out usually unless you can turn the key to the second position (key in ignition fully off being position 0).

You'll need to press in a little catch through a small hole in the ignition barrel housing as you do this, a small screwdriver (jeweller's type) works well.

Then the barrel should just slide out easily. :D

Easy to put the new one in!
