Here you can talk about the joy owning a Volvo 480 brings. Non-technical discussions take place here, like what is the difference between an ES and a S version.

Hello guys!

I have been looking at this forum for some time now and about a month ago I bought my first car :D

I have been looking for different volvo's for a while and then I saw a 480, after reading some forums I decided I wanted this incredible car :D
(knowing that it could bleed my bank account pretty badly  )

I didn’t have a very big budget but I found one that drove very well and costed al little over 700 euros.

It had some problems but nothing major. (the usual: window mechanism, leak in the boot etc etc)
I have a scrappy very nearby and it has 5x 480 so I guess I'm lucky :)

Pictures of the car:

Something about me:
I am 20 years old and live in Oosterhout in Holland.
I study law and have a part time job at a local "bouwmarkt" (construction market?)
In my spare time I'll hang out with friends or work on my car. I also have a nitro RC car :hopping:

In the past few weeks I already fixed al lot of little problems but there is a short list of things to do:

-intermittent wipers not working(doesn't wipe at all, sticky cem relay?)
-Low alternator voltage (between 12,80-13,80 higher in humid weather)
-Alarm sounds immediately after locking the door (door sensors are ok i suspect the infrared(?) sensors in the roof)

The car is a 480 turbo from 1990 with 212.000 km on it (yes its a lot but it runs perfect, stationary and on full throttle :D )

Although it has its problems I really fell in love with the car. now trying to save some money for a nice gt in the near future

Greets,

Max

if its the standard volvo alarm there are no infrared sensors, its all controlled by microswitches in the doors.

Unfortunatly it is not the standard alarm :( there are 2 sensors in the roof, also the red led doesn't work, I'll check the wires this weekend...

The accident repair place is picking it up for inspection today and I'm assuming it's terminal.
A bumber, grill, lower front panel (repair), fog lights and 1 indicator/daylight unit are probably more than enough to make it uneconomical on a 1993/K 2.0ES.

I'm probably going to move on to maybe a VR6 golf which is a bit younger so after 3 480's over the years, it looks like my ownership is coming to an end. I don't fancy a newer Volvo as there's nothing really like a replacement available.

It's 311 - Lavender Metallic, I really like this color but it's pretty hard to repair yourself in case of rust etc.
I have allready started to work on the rust on one door, I will show some pics when I am finished :)

Hi Max, welcome to the club!

That looks like a really nice car for 700 euros!

The intermittent wiper fault does kind of sound like a CEM problem but it's probably worth checking the switch itself either with a multimeter or by swapping it with one from the scrapyard, just to eliminate the easy things first.

Same colour as mine according to the VIN plate. When I had some mixed up in Halfrauds he said it was Lavender - I thought he was taking the mick, as it's obviously a very masculine steel grey metallic!!!

Thanks for the warm welcome guys :D

I allready checked the intermittent wiper switch, when I put it in that mode and put the gear in reverse my rear wiper starts working.
I guess the signal gets to the cem but after studying the electrical sheme I found out that it had to be the relay.
I once found a picture of a opened up cem with every relay discribed, didn't have a 480 at that time so i didn't save it....

if someone knows what I mean please let me know (I've already abused the search function really bad on this one  )

Welcome to the club! Another one from holland!

I've got a spare cem2 your welcome to try it before you start soldering.

As for the alternator, are you sure that when its charging 12,8v its charging at all? Sometimes a healty battery might put out almost 13v with the engine off.

Hi Bram

I also have a spare cem 2 but didn't try to fit it yet, it's really difficult to get at in a left hand drive car :(
I think (hope) the relay is just sticking and I hope I can wake it up without removing the whole cem... wish me luck

As for the alternator, it's really charging, just enough to keep te battery in good condition
but with winter ahead (lights, heating etc) I am not sure it will charge enough. tomorrow I will be taking the bushes out and have a look at them.

Getting it out is the easy part, putting it back in...

I thought you meant you wanted to fix the relay in the cem (you would have to take the cem out to do that) I think you can test the new cem without taking the old one out, the wiring loom might be just long enough.

If the alternator bushes look ok try making an extra ground wire and see if that makes a difference if it doesn't help its new alternator time i think. Have one of those spare too ;)

hmm well if I have to take it out anyway I might as well try the spare cem I have got.

Tnx for your advice on the alternator, I hope it's an easy fix but it's a 480 so it probably isn't

If you want to sell your spare alternator to me I would appreciate that, I don't know if you live near me: (Oosterhout NB boven Breda)

I'll give you an update tomorrow afternoon :)

Today I checked the alternator but haven't found anything really wrong with it.
Bushes are brand new... cleaned it out a little bit but stil just 13.30 volts (13.60 at the alternator itself)
I am thinking it has to do something with the voltage regulator, is this possible?

What do you want for your spare alternator Bram?

Have you tried making a new earth wire from the battery to the alternator? You can also make a new + wire just to be sure. Or at least check the connections that are already there. I think the part with the bushes is also the voltage regulator btw:?

If all fails i'm in belguim around Mol about an 1,5 hours from breda. I'll have to check with a mate what to ask for the alternator
