Add value to your car.... maybe!

Here you can talk about the joy owning a Volvo 480 brings. Non-technical discussions take place here, like what is the difference between an ES and a S version.

Add value to your car.... maybe!

Post by Brasco » Thu Jul 28, 2005 10:24 pm

Hi all,

I've just been reading some reviews on Parkers and I was thinking, maybe it would be good for us as a club, for the image and value of the car also, if we make an effort to post enthusiastic reviews of the 480 on any of these online guides, like parkers. It'll take up a few minutes of your time maybe, but the cumulative effect might make a difference.

There are so many indifferent reviews of the 480 out there  it's not right!

This is a unique car (I did see an aerodeck not long ago... they don't age well!!!) with real character. That's why it's got it's got an ownership club... It's a shame to see so many indifferent reviews.

Cheers,
Ad

i was witha mate at a car audio shop and i got chatting to the old boy about how easy/hard it would b to fit 480's with speakers etc etc
and i quote he called it ' an old mans car'...was tempted to say why aren't you driving one then
nobody i speak to seems to have even heard of them or if they do, they have this view that they are bad cars
one guy i almost bought an Escort off (yeh..too close for comfort) was trying to sell me it for £550...with 148000 on the clock and i mentioned i'd been thinking of buying a Volv 480 he baulked and gave it a slating
i can't stand fords though
so yeh 480's do seem to have a shit image, they seem to be a forgotten breed

It is a tricky one. A lot of people I try and tell about my car have no idea what i'm on about. Especially when I mention the 'V' word, I think breeze block springs to mind..... Then I take them for a 'joy-ride' and everyone wants to buy one!

I'm moving home tomorrow and there was a note left for me on the table this morning before I went to work, asking, and even paying for one last 'erotic / erratic joy-ride! (They're well known round here!)... Everyone loves the turbo.

Yeah, true, but we're talking about raising the profile not trying to convert. Basically I don't care how many get poisoned...

We all want people to take a second look don't we? That's all.

Nope, if they miss the point the first time round why bother offering a second chance. I just think our cars are a bit spesh... let the world know!

I still think the best thing about the 480 is the styling, not the fact that it has an obscure profile.

Sorry I'm completely lost about what you are trying to achieve now? :?

Garry
Where did you get lost then? I think the 480 is a marmite car, some people love it, some hate it... does that help my point?

I love my 480 to bits, but I don't particularly want them to become too popular as this would drive secondhand prices up and make sourcing bits from scrapyards even harder than it is at present.

I'm all for encouraging those who already have a love for these very special and different cars, but why drive prices up unless you're wanting to sell them? :dunno:

Honestly, it'd be nice to get some recognition for the effort I put in to this car... classic status and a nice drop in my insurance premium wouldn't go amiss. As it is people just think I'm trying to keep my crappy old volvo on the road... wouldn't mind, but I'm not a volvohead :volvo: I'd rather have a CRX than a 440 turbo... sorry Dan

Classic status will undoubtedly come for our cars, but you just need to be patient. Most people don't count cars as classics until they are 25 years old, and the 480 if fairly modern for it's age. I'm satisfied to know that I know this, and let others find out when they're really hard to get.

You can't make everyone love the car just like many people don't like marmite, but the fact that there are very active owner's clubs all over europe should be an indicator that there is something special about the 480 an lots of people already know this.

good point!

one of my GF's friends said that volvo's were gay and boxy. i told her i drove a 15 year old (and therefore supposed to be boxy) volvo and challenged her to pick it out from the row of cars outside.
guess what? she couldnt pick it out from the row of modern cars, thats what i call a timeless design, it never looks dated no matter what you park beside!

Roll on classic status!

Precisely my point. At the same time, if you like marmite, you don't want people who don't like it (i.e. Parkers) to put you off! All I was pointing out was that for a well loved car the reviews seem to be a bit cack.
