How Much??!!

Here you can talk about the joy owning a Volvo 480 brings. Non-technical discussions take place here, like what is the difference between an ES and a S version.

How Much??!!

Post by Murf » Sat Nov 29, 2003 7:40 pm

Went for a wee visit to the scrappy this morning and sitting in the yard was a k reg two tone in pretty good nick. I asked the guy if he was scrapping it and he told me no because all it needed was a flywheel sensor. He then proceeded to try to sell me it for a whopping 2500 pounds!!!! I politely declined and didnt have the heart to tell him my k reg in equally good nick cost me only 150 bucks!!! Liked the 15 inch alloys and the half leather seats though!

What exactly does "k reg" mean? I've read it before on the forum..

Maybe a stupid question, but remember I'm only a 480 Newbie :D

In the UK, the first letter of the registration plate used to be used (it changed a few years ago) to determine the age of the car (or rather the date the car was registered). The 1st of August was the date that each new registration letter prefix was introduced. From the 1st of August 1998, they decided to introduce new numberplate prefixes twice a year instead on just once. Here is a guide for future reference:

A = 01 August 1983 - 31 July 1984
B = 01 August 1984 - 31 July 1985
C = 01 August 1985 - 31 July 1986
D = 01 August 1986 - 31 July 1987
E = 01 August 1987 - 31 July 1988
F = 01 August 1988 - 31 July 1989
G = 01 August 1989 - 31 July 1990
H = 01 August 1990 - 31 July 1991
J = 01 August 1991 - 31 July 1992
K = 01 August 1992 - 31 July 1993
L = 01 August 1993 - 31 July 1994
M = 01 August 1994 - 31 July 1995
N = 01 August 1995 - 31 July 1996
P = 01 August 1996 - 31 July 1997
R = 01 August 1997 - 31 July 1998
S = 01 August 1998 - 28 February 1999
T = 01 March 1999 - 31 July 1999
V = 01 August 1999 28 February 2000
W = 01 March 2000 31 July 2000
X = 01 August 2000 28 February 2001
Y = 01 March 2001 31 July 2001

After July 2001, a new scheme was introduced, which if you're interested, you can read about here: http://www.ukcar.com/features/reg_year_2.htm, but as there weren't 480's being registered as late as this, it won't be of any relevance to anything you're likely to see on the forum! :wink:

In this case, a K-reg car means a car which was registered between 1st of August 1992 and 31st of July 1993.

Nice system :)
Thanks for the explanation. In the Netherlands you kinda have to figure out for yourself; they just start with for example AA-01-AA (which is reserved, don't know the exact start), and then go up until ZZ-99-ZZ, when they start using something like AA-AA-01.

2500 pounds for a k reg two tone from the scrap yard... for that amount of money I guess you should be able to buy at least two of them :)

how much

Post by JayTee » Sun Nov 30, 2003 3:09 am

I agree two and a half thousand £ for a k plate is steep
I paid £2300.00 for my N plate but its kinda tidy
my question is I love my car and consider it to be worth more in fact I'd probably not want to sell for less than £3500.00 so people to get to it how much do you value your car ??????
I'm keen to see what kind of trend there is on pricing I know there are a lot of cheap cars out there but looking on auto trader there are also a few that although tidy the owners or should i say dealers want mega dosh for :shock:

don't compare car prices to the ones of other countries. there can be differences of 20 %and more ! this even on NEW cars.

some times its even worth the hassle and the huge costs to get a foreighn car registered here in NL.

In the recent past this was often done here. I know my car is reimported.

But i am no car trader to know if it is still done, or interesting.

In the past, cars with some dammage, or cars older than 8 (?) years were considered "dirt" as far as german border offfice

Mine is a 91 J plate, 18.10l.91. Probably worth £700 - £800 on the market, I wouldn't sell ity unless you were talking silly money!!

I have had many cars in the 12 years I have been driving, this is the best drive of my life....so far!!
