Lights on all the time - its a Volvo!!

Here you can talk about the joy owning a Volvo 480 brings. Non-technical discussions take place here, like what is the difference between an ES and a S version.

Lights on all the time - its a Volvo!!

Post by suddy » Thu May 12, 2005 5:57 pm

What a strange bloke this morning. I got on the carpark, and i was sitting in my 480 with the engine running waiting for the train to come. Anyway, this chap walks past, and points at my DRLs and shouts, "Lights!".
I looked at him all confused, and he shouts again, "Lights!", and does that peter kay thing with his hands. I finally get that he means the DRLs, and then I shout back to him, "Its a Volvo".

Why spend 3 mins of his time telling me that my 480 had its lights on, surely everyone in the world knows that Volvos have thier lights on all the time, or he musn't have known that the 480 was a Volvo....

Rant over.

I shout back to him, "Its a Volvo".
That's so funny! I done the same thing, Also I have a turbo timer so the engine runs for a while (3mins) after I walk off (at work)

anyways i'm told "your car is on" so I shout back "Turbo Timer" they look confused!

Gota say though, those day running lights are quite bright! (without the pops on) Maybe he couldnt hear your engine as they are very quiet so prob thought he was doing you a favour by ranting on!!

Try flashing your main beam after switching off the ignition. The long range full beam come on for 30 seconds. That really winds them up!!! :hopping:

The turbo fan and LR lights together

Yeah i used to get that with my V40 too. I think the lights on all the time is classy. Aren't there certain models of 480 that dont do this? I am sure ive read threads about converting reflectors to daylight running lights on here.

Do you mean wiring in the day running lights to the reflectors on the rear/side of the car. The orange things...?

I laugh at all modern Volvos I see with their lights on. I see it as a sign that the owners haven't read the manual to learn how to turn them off :P

Although, on the 480, it just seems right ;)

I had that when one of my DRLS was dimmer tha nthe other, people would keep saying "you're headlight's broken" etc etc, had to pop up the headlights to show them i've got more than just the DRLS's! Can't people see the popup covers?!?!?!?

I would prefer to have the lights on, its Volvo's trade mark if you like, I know some Saabs have them on to but not as many as Volvo

Well, it's possible and not really a Problem, but it's surely not in any manual ;)
My 480 came without DRLs (as all 480s sold in Germany, because DRLs weren't allowed here till some years ago)
My car was just missing a contact in the light-switch and a relay (ok, the bulb-socket needed to be replaced too, there was a socket for a single filament 5W bulb fitted) and now i've got DRLs which is quit unusual in Germany (one cause for having it) and helps security too as i think.

Bizarrely yesterday I had some twat in a people carrier frantically (like i mean loads of times) flashing his lights at me and gesticulating at the front of my car. :?
Thinking I may have had bits of small child stuck in my grille or something i pulled over to have a look.

Absolutely nothing at all.

The only reason i can think of is the day runners were on, but did he really think that my headlights are just two inches square??
And if i want my lights on what business is it of anyone elses.....

awww, come on, even volvo owners don't know that, I couldn't even count the number of people who asked me why my lights were always on...and that was in luxemburg this weekend ! In this case, one must shout "its an english volvo" :D

I agree, but then mainly because the S40 used to eat up £12 lightbulbs in about 3 months. So I switched them off, I think it's because they used the main headlights all the time that spoils it on the modern volvos, was never so bad with the older ones as DRL's aren't so bad. Do love the DLR's on the S40 (Side Lights), and can't wait to have four orange bulbs round the 480 too :D
