Need help identifying a 480

Here you can talk about the joy owning a Volvo 480 brings. Non-technical discussions take place here, like what is the difference between an ES and a S version.

Need help identifying a 480

Post by Optimistic » Mon Sep 23, 2024 8:59 am

Hello everyone, had a bit of a hiatus life things I guess.

Well I need some help with identifying what parts/bits are worth saving as I have bought a parts car as my turbo was involved in an accident. I will write it to my story when stuff is sorted out.

Image

So the parts car is I belive an early 480 es but I can't check the vin, as it has been "stored for another car". It has no headrests in the back, large? wing mirror/s, unpainted bumpers and thin side mouldings, and black carpet with latex-ish under side. The engine is a 1.7 NA, with fenix? ecu, I belive that because of some GM stamping on the parts found in the engine bay. Need to compare if the chassis loom is the same as mine, but I could already spot a difference in the connectors on the block. It also has the no ac and bottom mount power steering pump.

I got it already half robbed, and the car was outside for 5 years, so the elements have done its toll on most of the parts. But the carpet although actually having a rat's nest inside looks undamaged.

Large mirrors, lack of rear headrests and side moudings suggests an early car. Any pictures of the engine?

B18E have a different inlet to the later engines - If you've the rectangular inlet (like a turbo but without the turbo lettering), then it's the later 1.7

At the point in time, its worth saving pretty much anything you can!

Black carpet? they're normally dark grey - does it have the striped (red or Blue) seat fabric?

It has an oval intake after the throttle body. The interiour color I don't know really as it is too moldy to tell. But it has some sort of stripped pattern. Will provide engine pics when I am at the car.
The transmission is M60 I think.

sounds like a B18E, which again, would indicate an early car.

You might be in luck and have some of the "pre cost cutting" goodies!

There were a few 'pre-cost cutting goodies' however Volvo's cost cutting on the 480 started almost immediately after production started, so your car may not have all of these:

Under-bonnet service light - Very very rare part, only the earliest 480s got these so your car may not have this
Footwell courtesy lamps - again, another part that was removed not long after launch
Soft-opening ash tray
Thick pile carpet
Oil pressure and Voltmeter gauges for the N/A engine as well as the highly sought after oil pressure sender bracket.

The B18E engine sensors are also quite hard to find I believe.

Well, I have the under hood light, and the carpet is I guess the thick one?
But the dash clusters and center console were already removed so I can't tell anything about that

These were removed? I have them in my 1993. Do you mean they just fold down the side of the seat so the backrests dont get dented?

It’s not that they fold down, they flex in as well.
