Considering getting a 480 as my main car

Here you can talk about the joy owning a Volvo 480 brings. Non-technical discussions take place here, like what is the difference between an ES and a S version.

Considering getting a 480 as my main car

Post by newienewbie » Fri Jul 26, 2024 6:56 pm

So, how good or bad of an idea is that, in all honesty? I might be coming to the best or worst place to ask this, as I'd expect most active people here to be borderline fanatics. That said, keep in mind I'm considering spending my saved money for this car...am I crazy? I feel like I might just be looking for some validation in a possibly terrible purchase.

The car I'm considering is a 480 ES 1980, it apparetnly has 150-160k km and, as far as I can see in the photos, it doesn't show rust. That said, I do realize I'll only be able to see it properly if/when I visit with a mechanic (waiting for an answer to see if they're willing to receive us). But, assuming the car is impecable, am I crazy to get a 35yo car as my main vehicle? I only use the car for work/shopping short trips, so I wouldn't be using it for a few long rides, let alone regular long rides.

I really hope my "pessimism" doesn't offend anyone, I really want the car as I find it absolutely gorgeous but I really don't want to throw my money away.

Cheers and have a great evening!

Long as they've been taken care of in their previous lives and a bit of mechanical knowledge its very possible
I daily drive my 480 from 1995, before this i had a carburetted 1991 440 that i also daily drove just fine with a bit of effort to keep it going properly now and again

This advice is for all 30+ year old classics.

Parts are drying up and in some cases require extended effort to hunt down.

I run a Mk2 Golf as my daily and its fine until something goes wrong. It may need a week or two parked up whilst I source the parts and that's fine because I have other cars to fall back on.

Also note that most retail garages - if you don't spanner yourself - will not search for those parts for you.

By all means go for it - but there needs to be a contingency plan when things go wrong. Or the bus.

I think you can sometimes have a slightly easier time with much newer cars (say under 10 years old) but all cars throw up issues. Older ones possibly more so.

If it’s had a lot done, then you’re probably mostly good for a while beside the odd niggle and general maintenance but if lots of the parts are 30+, then lots of parts will potentially gradually start to fail and need replacing. There’s where it starts; do you have a mechanic/garage you can trust/afford/who cares or can you do things yourself?

I think, in theory; great, and all you’ll really need is love and patience (and money but none of us probably have that, we just find a way!). If it’s going to weigh heavy on you and cause stress it could be a short 480 journey. Cars are blummin’ stressful whether you own 1 or 20!

There will be guaranteed issues. Luckily, there are most likely answers to help on here. There is a long list of common issues.

As Jay Kay Emm stated; parts are somewhat scarce. You will hoard and fill your house with 480 bits! ☺️

I’ve had 3 as dailies. They are fun and look great. You’ll enjoy it.

You’ll never know until you try. 😊 ….. but only try if you’re sure 🤗

Good question!

I have been mad enough to daily mine for the past 2 years (owned for 3 but 1st year I couldn’t drive yet)

Next summer I plan to retire mine (from DAILY use, no, I am not selling or abandoning). I have my eye on a diesel Chrysler 300C as I have a rather unorthodox taste in cars

As the others have said, your main issue will be parts availability, mainly rarer trim pieces and electrical bits such as gauges, switches etc. That being said, support is indeed fanatical here, and I have no doubt that someone will be able to help you out.

I don’t know if I’ve been lucky or have just looked after mine, but the only major thing that has gone wrong in those two years is the speedo which has failed (replacement cluster time). Trim parts are easy to break and sometimes difficult to come by. Just remember that these are quite delicate cars and have a much lower tolerance for abuse than modern cars

All in all, these are great cars to drive, and provided you end up with a good one (look for rot, dodgy electrics etc) you’ll be fine. If it’s one crumb of comfort, the engines in these are well proven Renault units from the Laguna, Megane and in the case of the 2.0, the Espace.

I use main as the daily driver! I always stick by things might go wrong but as a old car it's still fixable on your driveway unlike most modern cars

I feel like if you buy the car expecting to fix some bits (gauges bit of rust etc) you'll be all good! Alot of these problems you only have to fix once and all the lovely people here on the forum have made so many "fix it" guides for various bits and offer an infinite amount of advice

Altogether tho makes an awesome daily driver 😎

I have had mine since 2019 and it has been my daily for most of those years since I passed my test, with a hiatus while it was being repaired. Yesterday it had its first breakdown in the time I have owned it, and the recovery man was able to get it repaired at the roadside so I can say these are great cars for daily use. My experience with parts has been fairly good, just make sure you look after the sensors and panels, everything else you can usually get on Ebay with enough effort

Fix drivers side speaker
Annoying Scratching Squeak

Running a 480 as a daily is entirely possibly - You'll just have to do some forward planning.

Mechanically, they're simple. The last of the great cars which had enough electronics to make them reliable, but not enough to require a computer in the tool box.
Plan your servicing in advance. Keep your parts in stock, be your own volvo dealer.

The other good thing about dailying a 480, is you really get to know your car. As an example, I can tell what my average oil temp would be; what the coolant temp averages at and how much it varies between warm and cool days, and critically, what temperature the cooling fan comes in at. Would I remember all of that on a car I drove once a month?

I reckon it is feasible, I did so for many years, now it is the other half's car so used a few times per week.

I do have a wee hurl in it now and again just to make sure all is OK

just be aware that some parts are NOT easily / speedily available and you need to know which cars were used as donor eg which engine, and what NOT to believe on any 'does it fit my car' on the various web-sites.
I've not had any real issue getting parts other than rear suspension arms and even then I did get them from Poland, only a few weeks to clear customs etc.
