What's the oldest remaining 480?

Here you can talk about the joy owning a Volvo 480 brings. Non-technical discussions take place here, like what is the difference between an ES and a S version.

What's the oldest remaining 480?

Post by Martin63 » Mon May 27, 2024 3:52 pm

Alberto Locati in Italy is keen to find out the answer to this question. Alberto is the President of the 480 Club Italia.

One of the Italian 480 ES cars was registered on 7 November 1986. Is anyone aware of an older car and what's the oldest car that you are aware of in your country?

I'm not sure of Keith's registration but James' was registered 27 May 1987 and I think they are only two left, at least on the road anyway.

There is a post here: viewtopic.php?f=23&t=36281&p=222320&hil ... th#p222320

Hey all. UK cars are about a year late to the party so the earliest cars will not be the ones Keith and I have. Ours are the two earliest known in the UK though. Top fact: I used to own Keith’s too!

My chassis number is 507274, Keith’s is 507167. There are pre-production cars in the NL which are, I think, below 125 (which must be 500150 and older, but that is a guess).

Thanks James - do you know the first registered dates for the 2 red UK launch cars by any chance?

I was watching a UK launch video recently and I think the cars were left hand drive

I think I have those dates somewhere.

I heard the LHD cars for the UK event were crushed! That event must pre-date the UK launch cars.

The oldest registration still on the road in The Netherlands is first registered March 21, 1986. VIN ends in 224 and was produced February 25, 1986.

The VIN doesn't necessarily tell something about the actual production date. There are "prototype" chassis (below 300) which were completed later and have a lower VIN than cars which were rolling off the production line at the same time.

Wasn't that the car which has been moved all over Europe, doubling its price time and time again before it became for sale at Vermant in Belgium?

Oh it’s that one? The black one? That’s so cool that it is back on the road but for the first time really!

77 km really would be nuts! Do they really mean 77000 km?

Not the oldest by any means, but fairly old, is my 1987(E) 480ES, chassis 513546. What is remarkable is it has under 19000 miles (30000 kilometers) on the clock. As far as I can tell, it is genuine, give or take a few when the dashboard stopped working recently. I have every MoT (from 1990) and lots of receipts and service history, and the general condition backs it up. Unfortunately, lack of use can also be detrimental, and I am still working through the various faults, but getting there slowly!

I think they really did mean 77km. It's nuts isn't it?! It would be good to know more about the car. I think it was Guy Vermant in Belgium who sold it - he drove the red 480 cabriolet to Eindhoven 10 days ago.

E reg is definitely an older one in the UK. I saw a photo on Twitter/X of a black E reg earlier today from a couple of years ago.

The oldest I have seen are James's and Keith's red launch cars with D regs. I did see....... would you believe.....5 1986 cars awaiting restoration in the Netherlands two weeks ago. Quite a sight! They are alongside a railway track and do get comments by people on social media who think they are hallucinating when they see them! :hopping:
