Turbo valve comparison

Here you can talk about the joy owning a Volvo 480 brings. Non-technical discussions take place here, like what is the difference between an ES and a S version.

Turbo valve comparison

Post by northbridge » Thu Jan 18, 2024 3:20 pm

Hello!

TL;DR: Does anybody know what the difference is between Bosch 0280142102 and 0280142103?

The longer version:

I am new on this forum, not very experienced with Volvo 480 but owning one, and I have to find a Turbo bypass (aka. diverter, blow-off) valve for it. The engine code is B18FT. Already figured out that the original Bosch part number is 0280142102, and the Volvo OE number of the same item is 3430436. Bosch cancelled the production of this part in 2018. Based on the Volvo OE number, I can find this item in Skandix webite: https://www.skandix.de/en/spare-parts/e ... o/1021310/
They still sell it, but only 2 pieces are available, and we need 4 (the car mechanic guy is working on other cars too, not only on mine).

I found diverter valve for Volvo 480 on eBay, but that is not original Bosch, it's produced by Proparts:
https://www.proparts.se/en/artiklar/by-pass-valve.html
They claim that this valve is good for SAAB 9-3, 9-5, 900, 9000 and VOLVO 460, 440, S80, 480 cars.
They don't sell it for end users, but I called them and they recommended buying it from their distributor R&D Car Parts:
https://www.rendcarparts.com/saab/parts ... RD4441895A
This website also mentions SAAB 9-3, 9-5, 900, 9000 but does not mention any Volvo cars.
And the Bosch reference number is not 0280142102 but 0280142103 (only the last number is different)

Called Bosch again, and they said that the Volvo OE number for this item is 1275883. They manufactured this item until 2022.
If I search for this number, I can find many more available items, but I am not sure whether it's compatible or not.
Neither Bosch nor ProParts gave me technical documentations based on which I could compare these items.
Google also did not help, so I am clueless at this point.

Please help if you have any information about where I can buy 4 diverter valve, or if you know whether it's compatible or not.

Thanks!

'Valve 3' - Turbo Diverter Valve - Volvo 3430436

A solution for Bosch 0280142102 is no problem. You can trace this valve (and Bosch part number) all the way back to the Ferrari F40 (1987), through 1990 Porsche 944 Turbo, evolving into the 2001 Audi BAM 225 engine and beyond; albeit with 15 consecutive Audi part numbers in between. The latest incarnation today is VAG 06A145710P. Easily available from Audi/Skoda/Seat/Volkswagen dealers for a healthy £45. Visually identical...

Pattern valves are available - I originally purchased a 'Topran' at a fraction of the main dealer price. However, when I applied vacuum, it just didn't feel 'nice' and had an unsmooth action. The genuine, from VAG, is beautiful in operation and silky smooth.

Amazingly the Audi item, although some twenty years apart, has a location tab identical for the 480 inlet hose...

All fitted with new JCS Hi-Torque clamps...

One day I will do a "how-to" on the B18FT boost system, but the darn car is still a work in-progress so nothing can be recommended as yet.

Saying that, I have done a reliable 40 miles (get me) to the MoT station and back and the car pulls well and makes all the right noises (very discreet, whisper quiet boost & blow off).

Regards,

Jay

I can tell you from my experience having a roboumod ECU and the recommended Audi TT valve, PN #06A145710P, The car drives great and is reliable as one can be, since I installed it I probably did around 5k km. But I will say that how jay has it orientated or at least when I did this with mine it was not working right. I had to flip it and now it lets the air pass, without doing the fluttering sound. I cant tell about the noise as I have a pod filter on the car so I have all of it  .
