Loud whining

Took the car for a 40 mile spin today, the fuel dropped so they the red warning light came on the dash .
As I slowed to pull into a garage, I noticed a loud whining noise coming from either behind the dashboard, or more likely, from the engine compartment. It stopped when I turned off the ignition. It's not related to engine revs, as the noise was constant despite me reving the engine. Sounded like a pump.
After I filled up with fuel it got gradually quieter, and has now stopped.

Any ideas as to what it may have been?

Are you sure it wasn't the fuel pump behind you, between the rear seats? They can get a it noisey when very empty. Avoid that if you can as they can overheat and die.

It could have been.
Seems to have gone now the tanks brimmed.

You can calibrate the infocentre/fuel gauge. If you’ve the 60 litre tank, you set it to 59 (so you’ve always a litre left whe. It says empty). If you’ve the 48 litre tank, set to 47.

I’ll go find the instructions on how to, but someone may beat me to it.

Brim the tank, set the gauge to 1 or 2 litres below max fill.
