Newby to 480s

Hi
Thank you for accepting me to the group.

I have agreed to buying a 1992 limited edition two tone 480 1.7 today.
Obviously not got it yet but when I do I'm certain to require some help :D
The car is basically very sound but will in all likelihood require a nsf wing as the previous owner caught it on the garage door & I think it's beyond repair but will ask a good local bodyshop.

Is it worth trying to find a good wing off a old car or just go for a new pattern wing ?

Thank you for your help

Congratulations on becoming a 480 owner, even if you aren't just yet!
You made the right choice buying a Limited Edition (I'm totally not biased )

IF you can find a new old stock NSF wing, the chances are the seller will want a fortune for it (as with most 480 new old stock parts)
My advice would be to try and track down a used wing, as it would be much easier and cheaper. Two-Tone's are one of, if not the rarest colour for 480s, so the chances of finding a NSF wing in that colour probably aren't that high. However, you may get lucky if someone is breaking a Limited Edition. Your best place for that would be the Volvo 480 UK Facebook group, if you haven't joined it already.

If you can't track down a wing in that exact colour, you can always buy a different one and get it resprayed. I had my NSF wing resprayed recently and it wasn't prohibitively expensive.

Welcome to 480 ownership and this forum!

The answer to your immediate question is go for good condition used wing and paint if necessary. Chances of finding paytern panels for our cars are minimal...

Once you've got the car ask here as you have questions or issues - we'll help if we can!

Hi and welcome.

There are no new pattern front wings available so you’ll have to get a second hand one. Two tones are pretty rare so I’d expect to paint it. You could get lucky and get a vase green metallic car and just add the silver to the bottom half.

Thank you, I'll have a look around, I don't mind having a wing painted, just a case of finding one.

Are all the limited edition model the same two tone ? That teal/silver

All the Limited Editions were the same Peacock Green (Paint code 314) over Smoke Silver (Paint code 306)

Peacock green was also called 'Vase green' in other European countries - they're the same colour and have the same code.

Welcome to the club !! We have a rare editions register which I maintain so I'd be interested to know what the registration is in case the car is also a 'newby'.

There were actually 3 different models badged as Limited Editions, each available for one year only. The first in 1991 was the very rare Paris Edition. It was brought out to promote the new colour, Paris Blue. Then in 1992 came the 1.7 litre two tone, followed in 1993 by the 2 litre two tone. All the two tones were the same two colours.

We usually have a mobile meet twice a year, the next one is October 1st. If you would like to join us you will be very welcome.

Hi and welcome to the club!

As others have said, NSF front wings would have to be second hand, they aren't the most difficult part to find for the 480, and I think there is a 1987 car being broken on eBay right now IIRC.

Of course, you could always try Scandix, but they are very pricey, if they have them at all.

Either way thought look forward to seeing how your story here develops, welcome to one of the nicest places on the Internet! :D

I suspect this 480 will be new to this group.
It's been with the same owner for 29 years on a private plate, it's going back to the original plate that matches the etched windows.
It's a 1992 car, specifically 16th August 1992, the first owner had the car just over a year before the lady I bought it from got the car.
It's done 34k miles, all documented & has every MOT from new.

No doubt it will give me a few headaches & lighten the wallet but hey, that's what old cars are like.
I'll have it delivered early next week.

Congrats on purchasing the correct colour of 480. There's quite a few two-tones on the forum now!

There is a Volvo 480 breaker in The Netherlands and he might even have a two-tone wing, but sending the part to the UK will be your biggest worry. What works best is drive up here and get the part (and other parts you might need) and drive them back home.
