Speedo and Central locking gone within the same week

Here you can talk about the joy owning a Volvo 480 brings. Non-technical discussions take place here, like what is the difference between an ES and a S version.

Speedo and Central locking gone within the same week

Post by AdamG » Wed Jun 15, 2022 6:58 pm

Hi guys and girls,

So I’m having a few issues with the 480. Specifically the central locking no longer being functional and the Speedo just dying out of nowhere on a trip yesterday. Is there any advice on how to potentially diagnose and/or fix these issues. Would anyone in the North West be able to give me a hand for some £? I’m only young and I don’t really own any tools of any use as of right now and I feel as though being walked through the process face-to-face with someone a little more experienced might be much better.

I also want to add that, due to the central locking malfunction, I had an alarm issue the other day where my horn was just constantly going off for around 3 minutes (horrendous to say the least) and I now no longer have a functional horn! And I mean constant, it was not like a sequential horn tone like a conventional car, lol.

Any tips are more than welcomed. Many thanks in advance

Adam :)

A constant horn sound is normal for the standard 480 alarm. Luckily it's not one of those over-sensitive infra red types, but it's very unpleasant when it does go off. I've never heard a car alarm as loud as that before.

Interesting! I never knew that so thank you. Yes, it was one of the worst sounds I think I’ve ever experienced. 😂

If you were down here I’d happily walk through the process. It’s not half as scary as it seems, but would agree that having someone supervising is a great comfort blanket.

If I unlock the car from the passenger side and open the door the alarm goes off. That was how I first experienced the alarm haha
