Help wanted!

Here you can talk about the joy owning a Volvo 480 brings. Non-technical discussions take place here, like what is the difference between an ES and a S version.

Help wanted!

Post by AdamG » Tue May 10, 2022 11:48 am

Hi guys!

As you may remember, I recently purchased Celebration #467 from Martin Mc. It’s been an absolute pleasure owning thus far. I recently had the car MOT’d, and it failed on the brakes. I have been told that in order for the car to pass, I need to source 1 rear-right-hand-side brake calliper. That’s it! Would anyone happen to have one of these, or potentially be able to point me in the direction of one? I have seen a couple of listings on eBay but I thought I’d consult the forum first regarding my problem!

On a side note, I’m also in need of a LH side window regulator, a LH side door pocket, a new dash surround, and a LH side seatbelt arm! Help in sourcing any of the above parts would be hugely appreciated!

Many thanks in advance,

Adam :D

If you can live without the car for a while, you could send yours away for refurbishment if you don’t fancy doing it yourself.

All four of mine were done at http://www.brakecaliperspecialists.uk/

Lots of garages struggle to set up 480 handbrakes, so have a read through Jeff’s “How To” on here for a good guide. Also, the number of clicks at the handle ratchet is less than other cars I believe.

Just to echo James's post - Rear brake overhaul is covered in this thread. If a garage is doing it, make sure you trust them.... Because if they start to tell you now need another caliper, and pads, or and handbrake cables, it may just be that they're firing the parts canon at a problem they don't understand!

Don't get me wrong - I advocate replacing everything in one hit, but only when its actually required!

i'd echo that comment, the handbrakes are a real PITA to set up and get a decent 'pass' and even then I've felt that the design is 'less than ideal'.

If it's handbrake I've always tightened the adjuster to within a 'thochty' as otherwise there is to much travel at the cabin end and it runs ou tof effective angle at the rear

not sure why they'd reckon you need a caliper? if it was 'rear parking brake' AND 'rear service brake' then possibly caliper, otherwise just a setting up.

Actually by winding the adjuster in and out a few times so that the piston is free to travel can make 'just enough' :-)

mind you getting the blanking plug out can also be 'interesting' I repack the 5mm void with grease to make some chance fr following year and the 5mm Allen key has been modified to have 5mm on short side and 4mm on long side

On the MOT test form it states:

Repair immediately (major defects):
Nearside Rear Parking brake inoperative on one side (1.4.1 (a))
Central Exhaust system insecure (6.1.2 (a))
Service brake efficiency below requirements (1.2.2 (a) (i))
Parking brake efficiency below requirements (1.4.2 (a) (i))
Rear Brakes imbalanced across an axle Axle 2 (1.2.1 (b) (i))

The mechanic I spoke to said that it’s literally my rear right calliper causing all those issues other than the exhaust one (which I’m not concerned about as I’ll just buy some little rubber clip things or have him weld it)

check if NEAR side or OFFSIDE :-)

but both look suspect, it's failed NEAR side as 'inoperative' and then I guess a general comment aboot the WHOLE rear braking 1.2.2 & 1.4.2
1.2.1 will be due to the 'no brakes' on near side??

Thank you, Alan. I went today and spoke to the guy who did the MOT, he said that it only needed the one calliper (rear right hand side) and some little mount clip thingymagigs for the exhaust mount that snapped off. Other than that he said he loves the car and hopes he doesn’t have to see it back any time soon :’)
