DRL/Parking Light Bulbs

Do original Volvo 480 DRL/parking light bulbs have three (3) contacts - these being two (2) on the base and one (1) on the side (earth?)?
The bulb sockets in my car look the have these three contacts but the bulbs, which need to be replaced, have only the base contacts (however they did work).
Installation of LED seems to be the way to go (to avoid lens cover burn-out) but will two-contact LED work?
Any information/recommendations gratefully received.
