New 480 Turbo owner
Hello everyone,
As the title suggests, I am a new 480 turbo owner. The opportunity arose to get one, so i pulled the trigger and bought it, so now I can say that I owned a pup-up headlight Volvo .
So a quick introduction of myself, I am 21 from Slovenia, this is my 2nd car ( first one was a Volvo 850), currently finishing my UNI and I love older cars.
Now about the car, its a 1992 Two tone 480 turbo manual, with semi leather interior. It is an Italian car that was imported to Slovenia, and from what i know i am the 3rd owner? not sure on that. It has the original motor and transmission, paint is in OK shape.
i have recently re soldered the dash and VCM, so that works, the rear lights are in the process of restoration (sanding and polishing) making new gaskets to seal them up properly, I have applied sealant to the rear pivots that hold the glass to the body as it has seemed to leak from there, there is an oil leak on the back of the engine passenger side, the oil cooler is bypassed ( I want to add an oil to air cooler instead of that )-the oil temp got up to 118 while driving around 140 so i had to back off, the passenger pop up is slower than the drivers one, and the passenger front indicator sometime works sometimes it doesn't ( the bulb is ok ) seems to be a problem in the wiring. This is the extend of the problems i currently know, since the car has been with me for 3 days.
The plans for the car are to restore it and modify it slightly (lower it a bit and add 16inch wheels) as much as the budget will allow, and try to get a richmod/robmod if possible.
I have some questions, what is important do check/replace as the car has been sitting for 3ish years only been driven from time to time. before that allegedly the previous owner made 15kkm in 21years.
So if anyone has any information, tips or useful forum links, for a new turbo owner I would really appreciate it,
Thanks

Hi, welcome to the Forum, great to see another younger member and while I have never been, Slovenia is a country I'd love to visit!
Two Tone Turbos are very unusual, first one I have come across.
The indicator being intermittent is probably a problem with the connector to the bulb, in my case it sometimes pops out from the back of the light and has to be squeezed back in again, it gets quite repetitive but it should be an easy fix.
As for the other problems there are probably better people to answer, but this is by far the right place to be
Welcome, I look forward to seeing how this progresses

First thing: service it. Oil, oil,air and fuel filters, plugs, cap, rotor leads, timing and drive belts.Optimistic wrote: ↑Thu Dec 30, 2021 10:06 pm

What’s the bodywork condition like? If it’s good, then set about protecting it now.
Suspension? I’d do the lot at once; so shockers, droplinks, springs, wishbones and torque rods.
Wheels? 16” would mean you run a 195/50/16 - may be worth comparing tyre prices, as a 195/55/15 is a more common size.

Re: New 480 Turbo owner
The car has had an oil service last year and has driven less then 500km on it.
I will be changing all of the filters and electrical in the engine bay.
I am on debate with a company that refurbishes shock absorbers, as I want to lower the car. I know I will need a different panhard bar then also.
The tires I would go for 205/45/16 semi slick
The paint is so so, and there is a massive hole behind the clutch pedal, it will be addressed asap

there is a 'how to' fix that on here....Optimistic wrote: ↑Tue Jan 04, 2022 2:40 pmthere is a massive hole behind the clutch pedal, it will be addressed asap
also 'Mr H' had a photo of welded item?
a simple fix was just a thick section of metal that is held in location with double sided sticky pad, it might have been the factory 'dodge'?? as later cars had a longer release arm and the mounting at gearbox end was also extended.
I reckon you could add the extension to the release lever 'in situ' if you got hold of the gear-box piece. I know I extended the release arm on an SS1 (ex Sierra g-box) to make it easier for better half, then I found the problem was actually the pedal box was 'out of line'.....

If what you're referring to is the clutch cable breaching the bulkhead, I have schematics for a replacement part in either plastic or metal

Photos are always a tad tricky with the forum; have a read of this for advice
