W917/1 or W917 Oil filter?

Here you can talk about the joy owning a Volvo 480 brings. Non-technical discussions take place here, like what is the difference between an ES and a S version.

W917/1 or W917 Oil filter?

Post by WillC9303 » Thu Oct 28, 2021 12:53 pm

Hello,

Just went to change the oil filter on my car and 5l worth of brand new magnatec oil just ended up on my driveway due to the new oil filter spraying the oil everywhere :wall: I’ve noticed that the oil filter that came with the car is a W917, but the part I ordered from Amazon (which was described as a W917) turned out to be a W917/1. Does anyone know where I can get a correct oil filter for my 480 2.0.

Thanks
William

I think literally everywhere as it’s a Renault engine! Make sure it’s got a non-return valve in it to match the original specification.

I tend to use Volvo oil filters (for extra 10Bhp they give*)

its actually one of the few 480 parts that tend to be in stock!

I’m an idiot. The oil filter that came with the car was a W917/1. After trying to fit it for a solid 20 minutes, I can confirm that a W917 DOES NOT fit. I need to order a new W917/1 instead.

The 917/1 filter is listed by Mann as fitting the 480 and has a metric thread and visually it looks identical to the Volvo one (suspected on this forum of being the original supplier).

Interesting that the 917 (without the /1) has a UNF imperial thread! Wow, that’s a pain in the arse close but none fitting part number

As James has said, Mann are believed to be the original parts supplier for the oil filter so that one should be correct.

Personally I always use genuine Volvo filters since you can still get them. As per my comment about coolant they're no more expensive than other decent makes given you really want the non-return valve.

Even if your Volvo main dealer just laughs at you ;) they remain plentiful on ebay, often from Volvo dealerships. I did good business by bulk buying a year or so ago...

Given your other post about wanted parts, I will PM you.

All the best
