Volvo 480 Turbo from Siberia

Here you can talk about the joy owning a Volvo 480 brings. Non-technical discussions take place here, like what is the difference between an ES and a S version.

Volvo 480 Turbo from Siberia

Post by Spainal » Fri Jul 02, 2021 9:26 am

Hello everybody!
My name is Alexander and I am from Siberia.
Registered a long time ago, I decided to write about my Volov 480. I bought it in poor condition, the wiring was in very poor condition, CEM was killed and hung out so simple, it was decided to cut out all the wiring, change it to a contract one or make a new one for a long time. In general, I quietly began restoration work, there was no understanding of what was working as it should. Since in Siberia, for spare parts, everything is very bad to be ordered from Europe, and delivery in Russia in Russia is expensive because of long distances. I attach a photo of how it was and at what stage right now. Sorry for the English. Good luck and good luck to everyone! To be continued....
Update: I can't post a photo, so I would have laid out a lot of them, all in stages what it was, what was the state of the wiring, and so on

We have 2 cars in the city, 480 in total, one of my second survives and will soon die. I have already spent almost 3500 $ money on it, given our salaries of 300-400 $, it is not easy to have a wife and 2 children, well, I think that a man should have a hobby, it's better than drinking somewhere. Optics are basically restoring to buy a new one is simply unrealistic even not in terms of price, I can't even find it, but the car showed itself at -46 very warm, which is good news!
I will definitely write about her as the case is progressing. The car, by the way, 1989, not where it is not rusty, which pleasantly surprised me. After going through the move (I went through the M59-373E manual transmission box completely with replacing the gears) and rebuild everything, I plan to buy a modified ECU.

Hi Alexander what a fascinating story!

I know a lot of westernn cars started a new life in Russia after the Cold War, I am so glad to hear there is a community, or at least individuals preserving them. It sounds like you would have had to get very creative in order to keep this car going, maybe even discovered ways of doing things no one else has yet done. This is one of the Friendliest places on the internet, and you are very welcome here!

Just out of interest do you have any idea where your car was originally sold, if so it can help with the restoration to know as different markets had some different features, such as Germany needing a different light mechanism.

Look forward to seeing more!

Cheers and welcome
Ben

Hi MisterH!
The car is made in the Netherlands, I don’t know for which country. Here is my Vin XLBEX193EKC541801 if you tell me I'll be glad =) well, as I know that she left for Japan, because the car has zodiac signs in Japanese, I have a left-hand drive car. I read books and remember that the difference is in the light, how it will work, in fact, I myself can choose by installing the relay that I need according to the scheme, in the end I chose the European Scheme.

Well Alexander here we have the Analysis:

It seems to be an early turbo, definitely european spec, first 6000 produced. Now other experts will know more about what you need to face when dealing with this particular production year, but you have an early car pre facelift: This means that you might have some rare features that other cars don't, but potentially more issues. My ES is a 1988 car, though MY1989

I don't think these were ever sent to Japan officially, if so I would be very interested in that

I know for sure that she went to Japan, perhaps not officially, Well, there is a plate with the Japanese language. I will show you how the photo can be posted. Today the stretcher had to be taken from the painting, I gave it to sandblasting and powder painting.

most likely through Vladivostok! I almost collected all the spare parts in a heap, I still can't find the time to collect everything, I work a lot and take additional work to buy more spare parts and assemble that car at the end.
I have a question right now, I have a lambda probe in front of the catalyst, but after it there was some kind of 2-wire sensor, the old owner killed him, and I can't understand what was there, there is a light on the dashboard with the designation EXT. and when the engine started to work not exactly, the small lamp started to light up! I think logically thinking that the catalyst overheating indicator.

Sounds plausible, but I am not an expert on these as my car is pre-catalyser :/

The old owner cut out a cover from a simple glass, and inserted it, it was removed and the original was bought!

Everything was very sad, the car did not really work and from its appearance it was clear that there was a lot of work to be done!

Wow Alexander that looks like a big job, the winters in Russia often lead to very dirty cars, what is the rust like? I would be shocked if it had survived this long in Russian winters without some corrosion

Rust is when the metal is oxidized, or, in other words, it is discharged from water. The car is not covered with an anti-corrosion coating. As you can see, she survived.

Right now, work is underway to lay the wiring with its modernization. additional cables with a minus are laid, in different ends of the car, which ensures the best minus and unloading of the network.

Oooh you have the same seats as my car, with the blue piping, that is quite rare

When it comes to rust be sure to check the metal bar behind the bumpers as they can go easily without warning
