Pierre Cardin 480ES Fountain Pen

An unexpected Ebay find from a few years ago, a new old stock Pierre Cardin 480ES fountain pen in a turquoise tortoise-shell effect from the late '80s I would imagine. Someone may have a picture of it in a lifestyle accessories brochure from the period and may be able to shed more light on it. Pen seems like a quality item and the cap fits on nicely in a slow gliding manner, the metal parts are not up to Parker pen finish but doesn't particularly detract. Box is made from the cheapest plastic available and glossy printed cardboard! Considering what a bonkers fashion designer Pierre Cardin was and the faux luxury designer goods his company sold/sells, you do wonder what message Volvo wanted to send out!

I don't do true envy, but if I did...

I always liked Cardin designs, could only be from the 80s

Hey, I like that!!

Remember that, in a nutshell, Volvo were aiming the 480 at Yuppies - so the Pierre Cardin pen would have completely looked the part

Of course, I’m not thinking ‘80s enough, I have a real problem with that... :D Wonder if they did the pens in other colours or ball point versions or pencils?

Sylvia, have you shown off your 480ES headscarf on here?

Wow - those are some accessories!

I noticed that the launch book given to the press in 1986 is in the background. I have just tracked one down and I am really looking forward to reading it.

I love the large, high resolution images in this book. When you don’t think a bit of trim fits correctly on your car, you just look in this book and find it never did! Problem solved, worrying about nothing... :D

Always reassuring!

As with most things 480 related, most copies of the 1986 launch book seem to be in the Netherlands these days and I bought one yesterday. There is one on eBay in the US though:

Even with shipping and the additional importation fees and administration charges this is still a very good price for an English language book.

Agreed James - they mostly seem to be in Dutch and French. I am very pleased that I was able to get an English copy from the Netherlands earlier this week. This US copy was my "Plan B", so I thought I would mention it to other 480 fans in case someone else was looking for a copy
