Pud the Celebration - previously known as R2...
As you know from the previous thread that was running about the sorry-looking Celebration that became "Rescue 2", Pud, as she is now known for obvious reasons, has moved from the Sanctuary to the Pamper Parlour.
Over the last couple of days I have made start where Jeff left off.
First thing to sort was the headlights - the OS stopped popping up just before I collected Pud (which proved to be a defective motor), the lights weren't popping up at the first switch setting (ie no dim-dip lights), and the OS light was not closing flush with its surroundings...
So, a raid of the spares for a replacement motor and replacement switch, and then a long time spent adjusting the cover and arm from motor to light, and now all works as it should. Bizarrely the thing that was bugging me the most was the light not closed cleanly, so I am really pleased to have now got this:
OK, there remains the question of the NS light which had a broken cover and currently sports one in a lighter tone of grey, but I'll get back to that...

Re: Pud the Celebration - previously known as R2...
Next up, some further in-depth cleaning.
I washed Pud today, and broke Rule No 1 of taking on a new 480. That Rule reads " unless and until you know otherwise, assume the back end of your 480 will leak like a sieve, so be ready with towels etc" I merrily waded in, spraying loads of water everywhere, and soon had a flooded boot, wet rear footwell carpets etc...
So out came boot carpet, rear seats, lifted rear carpet, got a heater going drying it all out. I decided that I would remove all the side panelling and see what state everything is in - actually, it is all very good, but of course Pud spent some 9 years of her life living in a barn...and the mice moved in...and mice are destructive...
It appears that the foam inserts that are common in our cars were appealing either as bedding or on the menu (wouldn't like to say which, but despite Jeff removing loads I am still finding seed husks, so perhaps it's the latter. Either way...
- the shredded foam was a good half-inch deep...
More traces behind the forward side panels:
Fortunately, although they have had a good nibble at various bits of rubber trim and insulation, they appear NOT to have had a taste for wiring, which is a relief!!

Re: Pud the Celebration - previously known as R2...
Lots of silly little things done too - quick successes that convince you you're making progress.
That includes using these three items from my spares:
Glove box pin - so that's no longer flapping in the breeze!
Bonnet release knob - much easier than trying to pull on that little metal lug
Bridge for fuse position 23...
This last is important as it resolved a multitude of issues yet appears something a lot of people don't know about: had Jeff known it would have avoided a lot of head-scratching! Accordingly, I'll do a short note about this separately as a sort of "How-to".
In the next day or so I'll try and get some more photos showing progress rather than problems!

Wow David, your not shy of taking on a job are you!
I'm sure you have it looking ship shape in no time.
I have the same issue with my light not closing flush, it always bugged me but I think it looks worse when it closes too far.
I've had a breif look at doing it when I first got it but couldn't work it out / do it!?!
Is it easy and how do you do it?
Many thanks!

Having had 3 red Celebrations I've always hankered after a storm grey one - so yours has been a source of envy...
When lockdown is eased and we can meet up again, why don't we make sorting out your light the project for your next trip over? But if you want to tackle it yourself you need an allen key, a screwdriver, flexible hands, and patience!!

Re: Pud the Celebration - previously known as R2...
Hi David.
That sounds like a plan, it would be nice to catch up and see what you've being up to.
I've been doing a few jobs, replacing the seat belt arm we broke, replaced a cracked fog light today and in the first lockdown I treated the rear arches and resprayed, that was involved! It took two attempts, it started out just a small bit around the arches and ended up being a rear end respray! . I'm happy enough with the results for now, it will need new arches at some point.
I'm going to clean the engine bay like yours next and fit a new boot seal.
I'll be in touch when we get let out!
Take care and see you soon.

Re: Pud the Celebration - previously known as R2...
After stripping out the back end of the Pud as per yesterday's photos, today involved putting it back together again. Whilst at it, I raided the precious spares to ensure that the seatbelt arms which both sides looked like this:
now both look like this:
Gave the seats a further clean and treatment - with Jeff's previous work to build on, they look virtually brand new now!
In the top picture you can see the flooded footwell, which is now dry...

Looking great already David, I'm so pleased Pud's getting so much love and attention after all the years of neglect. I'm another fan of smoke grey and there's so few of them the save just had to be done !

Looking good and, yes, such a nice colour. You'll have plenty of pampering time to get it ship-shape before it meets its new friends. Look forward to seeing the progress.

Re: Pud the Celebration - previously known as R2...
I'm not sure anyone has made much of a successful repair but you could possibly drill, dowel and glue it if you really can't get one. They do come up but may require sending to Facebook to speak to some of the European sellers on your behalf.
They are just difficult to reach when you don't have them and look pretty neat when you have them in place.
As for getting the belt to be held by it, the little roller (8) prises out of its carrier (7). You put the belt between the carrier and roller and install the roller again.

looking good. Did you say the head lamp cover is a lighter shade of grey? can't tell with the reflection.
They seat belt arms can be fixed. more difficult when they snap in two.

Whilst I was waiting for some paint to dry I had a a go at fixing my seat belt guide. The one I had fitted to the car got snapped in two.
I had a spare arm but the pin was snapped off.
Amongst my box of nuts and bolts I found a 3mm fine pitch screw. Drilled the arm and pin with a 2.5mm bit, with the parts being plastic the metal screw went in nice and snug.
Re: Pud the Celebration - previously known as R2...
Thanks Colin
Yes, the NS cover is something like the earlier smoke grey - as you say, the reflections hide it well in the photos!! I have the original but cover has separated from the frame it sits on. I am looking at either repairing that or else I'll just re-paint the odd one. A lot will depend on trials as to how well I can match the paint shade...
I still had a pair of complete seatbelt arms to repair the situation, but of the broken ones one still had the pin from the end, albeit broken. I thought I remembered an item on repairing them, so I shall be having a go at that myself - be helpful to still have spares where possible!

Re: Pud the Celebration - previously known as R2...
So over the last week or so work has intermittently continued on Pud, and I have to say I am very pleased with how she is coming together now!
At the front end of the car, I have cleaned, re-sealed and adjusted the long-range auxiliary lights, repaired the broken pop-up cover so Pud now has her original matching pair again, re-aligned the lights/bonnet/front panel (and yes, the O/S light is still slightly off...) and fitted a new front splitter (one of the carbon fibre ones that I have had stored away for years). I think pretty much all of that can be seen in this photo:
Also, there was a problem with the washer system - fill the bottle too far, or operate the rear washer, and water came running out of the O/S wing. So I removed the wheel-arch liner and, sure enough, the mice had been at it there as well The photo is of the pipe hanging down in the arch with rear wash button being pressed:
It was about 8" of holes, which explained a lot...so replacement length of pipe fitted and now I have a rear washer again, plus the washer bottle can be filled right up.

Re: Pud the Celebration - previously known as R2...
Meanwhile, inside the car, I have swapped over the blower fan switch for one with an "off" setting - I know it needs to be on at least "1" for the air con to operate, but I like a window open when possible and the air con (even if it was working, which it isn't) won't operate at much under 9 degrees C anyway, so that fan going all the time gets irritating.
A replacement headlamp switch resolved the last of the pop-up related problems.
Dismantling and cleaning the boot lock and its associated switches means that the boot light now works again. However, Pud's N/S door started to lock and unlock itself at will; replacing the CEM with a known fully working one resolved that, so there's another PCB to study the soldering on on a wet day...
Voltmeter and oil pressure gauge fitted, plus the sender (complete with bracket) - I know they need to be taken with a pinch of salt, but they look good anyway
Yes, it is a turbo gauge set with the turbo gauge removed - hence the voltmeter at other end to normal two gauge unit, and no "Volvo" logo on the blank panel, which is just a spare piece of black plastic I had.
Hmmm...I need to paint the wording on the Info Centre!!
