Scrap or Restore, youtube 480

Here you can talk about the joy owning a Volvo 480 brings. Non-technical discussions take place here, like what is the difference between an ES and a S version.

Scrap or Restore, youtube 480

'Evening all

I discovered this yesterday and have been in discussion with the video creator about the car, as he is really keen to buy it off his mate and restore it. It's a G-plate turbo with 81k on the clock, but it looks like a massive job, I have advised him to the best of my ability but you lot know more than I do, but rusty carpets can't be good...

I've said I will get back to him on the verdict. Nice to see an ally of the wedge but even my enthusiast eyes tell me this one may be too much... :?
Current Jobs to do (23/1/22):
Fix Central Locking
Fix drivers side speaker
Annoying Scratching Squeak
Water leaks
Complete Front O/S rebuild

Seen it, commented on it!
:D

"It's a very brave "restore it"; There's less than 250 cars left in the UK (there was only ever around 3.5k of the turbos), so you've a rare car. It also looks, from the interior, to be one of the early cars too."

There's part of me that simply wants to see every remaining 480 saved, and a car like that brings a tear to my eye and I imagine embarking on the TLC...

But I have to say that restoring that one, whilst of course possible, will be a tall (and labour intensive and costly) order :?

By the looks of it, it's been sat in a garden, partly overgrown, so expect a lot of rot. Rear bumper hanging, looks like there's not much metal left. Both rear lights cracked.
I'd say it would be a very challenging job to get it back on the road, if not a bottomless money pit. I've scrapped a 1990 Turbo that was in a much better state (and still not worth saving)

Hi guys,

I have been away for a long while as i have not had me 480Turbo on the road for A LONG TIME. If you haven't guessed it by now, yes i am the owner of the above said car.

I am sorry I have been away for so long and have possibly left the car neglected, although life has gotten in the way and I haven't had anywhere else to store her except from where she is now. I have although taken recent pictures which I will upload soon, if people are keen to see her.

I am here to mention though, that, I AM LOOKING TO GET HER BACK ON THE ROAD and I need help. I really need a lot of help.
She looks worse though than she really is as i spent about £500 on welding and repairs about 9 months before she went off the road some years ago.
So mechanically she is okay (not good only okay), the mileage is a little wrong though, the speedo stopped(intermittently about 4 thousand miles ago so she is around the 85K.

I saw the video too and was surprised as it was taken without my knowledge. Anyway, I am based on the south wales coastline (not west) but am looking for help, with the following; - I need a new subframe (reason for not going back on the road as had 50p hole which failed pre MOT)
- Key!!!!! do i need a transponder Key to be reprogrammed or is it just a blade that needs cutting? (G reg 1989 model)
I had previously bought things: new wing mirrors and door seals before she was left off the road)

Lots more bits i'm sure but those are the essentials as for getting her started and moved from where she is sat.

I know she will cost a fair bit to get back on the road, but theres just some things money can't buy like the smile on my face when I used to driver her back and forth to my parents (170 miles down the M4). I'm sure some of you will agree.

As always any help is much appreciated and as i've had her for almost 12 years you can guess that i'm not ready to give her up, she really has been something that has stopped me from getting sleep recently and i need to fix her and enjoy again.

Some good news - The key doesn't need any kind of transponder, so there's one bit of good news!

I'd also be sending the video maker a bit of a note to ask him to take down the video as it was filmed without permission.

@jifflemon
Thank you so much for replying! And soo soon, peace of mind for me to only have to make a call to volvo then for the key code for a locksmith to cut (I'm guessing)

This relaxes me and gives me some peace of mind to sleep at night! I really am lucky to have such knowledge peeps on this club on the side!

There no need to tell him to remove the vid unless that's the rules here, but I like that he's done the video in a neutral manner, I have also messaged him to provide him some info on the car and I said I would have like to be there to fill in the gaps of info,

I am aware that there are not many of these left and I know if I fixed her I would count myself lucky to be driving such a special car. As mentioned I welcome any help and any no doubt I will be reaching out for parts to some of you!

So here are some of the photos i took the other day after have a little clear around the hedge.
I didn't manage to do any cleaning just clearing so she is how she lay. (more work to follow)

She is sat on those wheels as the standard 14" were stolen from where she was sat previously, as can be seen below:
Image

Moving her from there onto my friends land via Discovery & trailer:

Then she sat there for a long time:
Image

In her former glory at my parents down in Reading, on a set of BSA Motorsport split rims which i picked up for a steal, (then later were stolen), yes I live in South Wales and a lot of thieves operate in the areas close to me
Image

Hope you agree she is still too good to scrap, and needs a resto project to begin, i am still in need of a subframe and a key to get things moving, then on with everything else.

Id love to know what people think and appreciate all info, pointing in directions :hopping:

Last image it seems wont upload, sorry :(

Looks better than the Celebration recently donated to the Rescue Group!! When hunting for a subframe, bear in mind manuals and autos have different ones.

I second James’ comment. Can’t say I’ve seen a full silver 480 ever. Looks lovely. Good luck if you go ahead. I’m sure it’ll look fantastic if it’s doable. 👍🏼

Amazing how much better she looks just for having the bushes cut back out the way - well done! :D

Clearly a full restoration is going to be a major job, but if you have the determination and can do/afford the work, then I say "go for it, definitely!!". I notice you have no sun-roof and, at G-reg, that must be one of the really early Turbos, so if she can be saved, please save her!

Keys, as Jeff has said, are not chipped or anything complicated like that. If Volvo will give you the original key code (and why shouldn't they?) hopefully you can go from there with any locksmith/key cutter. If they won't, I am assuming from the photos you have access to the car? It isn't hard in that case to get the lock barrels out, and it's not uncommon to see lock barrels with keys available on ebay. You could just replace the locks all round.

As Sylvia said - and I appreciate you have a subframe problem which is obviously a major issue - it looks better than our latest rescued Celebration. So that should be some encouragement, for a start!

Good luck, keep us posted.
