Fuel Inst?

Here you can talk about the joy owning a Volvo 480 brings. Non-technical discussions take place here, like what is the difference between an ES and a S version.

Fuel Inst?

Post by MisterH » Sun Apr 26, 2020 5:17 pm

'Evening all

Just a quick one, what is Fuel Inst on the Info Centre?

Everything works on it, and gives a readout except for the last option on the left. I don't know what it does, expect that it gives a null readout, and "inst" perhaps standing for instance

Someone will know what it means, can anyone give me a pointer?

Many thanks,
Stay safe all

It does indeed mean instant - it's your mpg at that precise moment - you can see it changing dramatically when you change gear or go up or down hill. The average is calculated over the previous 10 miles, and the mileage remaining in the tank is based on that remaining constant.

Ok thanks for that Sylvia, so I take it it is normal to have its display as - - - ? I would assume that if there was a problem, that whole side of the IC would be dashed

are you driving it around when it's displaying --- or sat on the driveway letting it tickover?

MPG is dreadful when a car is first started and cold, you will need to track it as it warms to see if the reading is realistic. It does shoot up and down though, which is why we also have the average. Is that showing something near sensible ?
