Oooh, just looking at the lavender one. Iβve just realised, the older man who had one in my village (one I drooled over until I got my first in 2005!) must have been this colour. I remember when I got close to it (in the bowling alley car park
) it had that coloured shimmer; not black. Also, his was a P reg. Rare on both parts, I guess.
Sorry, irrelevant post!

The clear lenses question seems to divide people - I think it depends what colour car they are on. Your blue, for example, looks great with the orange lenses, but on something like my Celeb I think they clash with the burgundy red. Celeb alloys I can take or leave - its my GT alloys (Vesa) I like!
Good job we all like different things eh? I can't stand the Vesa alloys!

you you have any idea if K935 YRW is around still?
Last MOT was 2008
I rather suspect she is long gone, sadly. Still, in the bright side Jeff, at least I don't have to worry about you nicking my wheels when we get our meets back up and running!!

Hello knowledgeable folks,
I can see from my ES VIN plate under the bonnet that the paint code is 318-1
Question is, how do I use this to order some paint for touch-up / minor respray purposes, and what else will I need (e.g. lacquer)?
Any advice appreciated (especially about reliable suppliers who price reasonably)
All the best!
Martin

Depends how much you need, for mine I'm going to shell out for a partial full respray (very keen to preserve as much of the original paint as I can)
I was at the PC resto show (remember that
?) and there was this guy respraying his 480ES live (Peacock Green I think) and I think he said that you needed to lacquer it for a proper job, he was doing the rear quarter, and had the glass out and everything. He had to get it right, as he was driving it home the next night

Given I know that Nilani is 322, I am assuming that's the blue one you're talking about Martin?
If so, it's metallic so you'll need a base coat and lacquer. I doubt the paint is available from Volvo any more so you'll need to get it made up (I use Express Paints but there are plenty of places available who'll mix it).
The extra figures after the three digit number reflect the number of subtle variations there were of the colours (a bit like the shade and batch numbers on rolls of wallpaper). What you will get will be the basic colour - obviously a proper bodyshop job will ensure it is blended in with your existing 26 year faded colour, but if you do it yourself you can get a decent enough match (as I hope I've proved with Nilani!)
On that subject remind me and you can have what's left in the rattle can of 322 - no use to me anymore

The diigit after the hyphen is a code for the paint manufacturer - and the colour can vary quite a bit from one to another. The burgundy GT and the burgundy Celebration are noticably different colours parked side by side, due entirely to the fact that while the colour code is the same, the manufacturer's code is different. If you can find somewhere that wants that last digit you will stand a better chance of a good match. Volvo did change manufacturers a few times but I don't know if it affected 318 Paris Blue, which came out in the UK in 1990 despite what the club chart says (Dutch info)
Good luck !

I've deliberately not mentioned it because it may well accurate for mainland Europe but there were quite a few differences for the UK, both in terms of what colours were called and when they came out - as Sylvia says, Paris Blue is a good example. Another is "lavender " which in the UK was called "oyster grey metallic ";in the UK "flame red" was "burgundy red", "vase green " was "racing green" etc etc...

Hello all (David, Jeff, Sylvia, Mr H) and thanks for your advice and observations
So, what do I actually ask for / order from the paint folks? Am I looking for 318-1 Paris Blue plus lacquer, or do I need to tell them something else?
Thanks for your replies!
Martin
PS David, yes, I would be glad of the rattle can, and you'll be glad to hear that Nilani has a working speedo again (I just wiggled stuff about under the bonnet, which seemed to do the trick).

Morning Martin
All the paint supplier should need is that it is Volvo 1994 Paris Blue metallic, 318-1. You'll need base coat plus lacquer.
Good news re the speedo! You nearly failed your probationary ownership there...
I'll do my best to remember the rattle can for when we next meet up.
All the best

So, does anyone have examples of UK specific/not listed on the main site colours for 480s*? Even better with pictures!
Holy thread revival - You asked, I (eventually) delivered!
Early brochures are Zero help. They list the colour names, but NOT paint codes.
Earliest Brochure lists:
Next earliest brochure has:
Note that Silver grey metallic has become Smoke Silver Metallic. Final year of the "old" interior gives us
When then move onto the "grey plush interior" and get:
Around the launch of the Paris Edition (no brochure - YET!) we gain a new colour
Then 314 Peacock Green Metallic and 319 Steel Grey Metallic come in, replacing 306 Smoke Silver and 311 Oyster Grey Metallic
and in the final year, the most colours ever available!
And the specials?
Twin Tone: 314 Peacock Green Metallic over 306 Smoke Silver
GT: 321 Racing Green Metallic and (???) Burgundy Pearl Metallic
Celeb: 323 Storm Grey Metallic, 239 White Satin, 322 Burgundy Red Metallic
A massive thanks to DC Walker for the loan of his brouchure collection from where all this has been gleamed from.

Just to add, the Twin-Tones had their own paint code (350)
Itβs also worth noting that two of the pre-prod U.S. prototype 480s were factory painted in Beige Metallic (code: 310) and both had grey interiors but with some prototype beige interior parts left over from U.S. testing.
I have numerous pictures of both cars if anyone is interested.

What an incredible revival Jeff, was so surprised to see this get done and what an amazing job!
I still want to find an example of a silver, 1987 car which should be in Silver Grey Metallic, as opposed to Smoke, but I only know of one possible survivor

Great work Jeff!
Just a few observations based on the above:
Not only did red become bright red without changing code from 231, bright red then kept that name but changed code to 235
There were 3 different whites between 87 and 95
Black was originally solid - I think the "standard" Volvo code 019. It soon became black metallic 305. And, of course, lost the red stripe in 1994 before disappearing completely for 1995 (replaced by storm grey metallic 323)
