Genius idea or crazy drunken fool?

So, after enjoying a few beverages at my local I wobbled home and perused the 480 facebook site, where upon someone had posted about their "old" car.

And (as I've posted on there), I was struck with an idea.

Do we think the DVLA would release, to the club, a list of all registration numbers currently taxed and Sorned with them?

Not asking for personal details such as owners, just literally a list of registrations numbers so we could say "yes, it's still about" or " sorry, it's likely to be a Chinese washing machine by now"

Obviously, things such a plate changes could happen, but, overall, Good idea, or crazy drunken fool - go to bed, idea?

I think it's certainly worth a shot. I can't see them having an issue.

I remember a time when I actually got all my VW campers old owners addresses from the DVLA! I managed to get in contact with nearly all of them and found out loads of history and interesting stories. A shame you cant do that kind of thing anymore.

Well it's worth a shot. I think they might say that they won't go any further than the ‎data already released for the likes of howmanyleft but I would be happy to be wrong.

I did write to them a few years ago trying to find D864 CPV. They did actually write back and quite nicely say that they understood why I would want the information but couldn't provide it. In the end I found Keith Cooper by accident on a Google image search and saw the car's registration.‎

Good luck Jeff.‎

I had to laugh when I saw the post title Jeff - I saw the words "Genius idea or crazy drunken fool" and must confess I know immediately who that was  ;)

Seriously, though, I agree it's worth a shot. I suspect that in this day and age of GDPR, regardless of whether what we seek actually breaches the regulations (and personally I agree it doesn't) you will be met with a refusal to go anywhere beyond the clearly defined tick-boxes of what is allowed, but you might be lucky and get someone who is actually prepared to think about it rather than dismissing you out of hand.

It would be excellent information to have - I think many of us suspect the fate of our old cars but would love to be more certain.

All the best

David

Don't think GDPR should be a problem since in Sweden you can pay to get a list of all cars and owners from the government based on certain brand, model, year and even stuff like age and gender.
Little scary but I have actually been contacted buy a person interested in buying my car (not a 480 :) ) even though it was not for sale.

I suspect that the DVLA computer will only be able to produce such a list if it is something they offer. Also bear in mind that not everything is controlled by the EU.
Worth asking the question though.

ABZ airport has two channels, EU , 'non EU' and then handwritten below the 'EU' channel is 'including Norway' :hopping:

In The Netherlands (also EU) it is quite simple, the Dutch counterpart of the DVLA (RDW) provides an open web service with an API, where you can apply a query which returns vehicle data. No data about its owner, but you can do some useful data aggegration.

Click here to retrieve the number of valid Volvo 480 registrations. This includes cars that have long been scrapped but its owner has forgotten to deregister the car, or are sitting as a rust heap in someone's back yard.
