How many left....

Here you can talk about the joy owning a Volvo 480 brings. Non-technical discussions take place here, like what is the difference between an ES and a S version.

How many left....

Post by jifflemon » Tue Feb 06, 2018 8:57 am

For those that haven't discovered it, the website howmanyleft.co.uk gathers up data from DVLA and displays the horrifying results.

For those that just want the Headline figures: out of the 20k+ volvo 480's sold, there's only 930 left in the UK.

Now, there's possibly a few more that are sat neither taxed or Sorn'ed, and the records only really start from 1994 but that's a pretty scary figure.

Celebrations? Well, according to the stats, only 470 actually got registered. There's now 133 left

GT's? 353 down to 65

Turbos? 3, 311 ish down to 164.

I can get (at a push) why the normal ones can hardly be found, but the GTs and Celebrations?

A Celeb was always my preferred choice. This is The Alamo and we are not the Mexicans, but we just need to hang in there :)

always take the 'exact' figures with a large pinch of salt, but the general trend is scary!!!!

it also explains why parts are getting 'rare' , why would you stock parts when less tan 1000 left on the road! :(

It makes nice reading if you look up SS1, the SORN to 'on road' observes a six month cycle, oddly enough the number on SORN is higher October to March :-)

but in reality the % of SS1 surviving is much better, only built around 2000 of ALL flavours

I'm addicted to "how many left"... love it. Although its not without caveats....

Its only as good as whats printed on your V5. So, for my TVR, my V5 just says TVR - the model field is blank. This is typical of the early Griffiths - but it does distort the numbers when people want to see how many Griffiths remain. Magazines often quote it but they are wrong.

The website is clever because you can filter on model year. For example, GOLF GTI has been used on a V5 for 35 years, and when you search GOLF GTI you'll get thousands. But you can then say which date of manufacture still exists (i.e. GOLF GTI made in 1991).

Regarding our cars, I don't understand why the 'sunroof' mentioned in the model field was so important, so much so that it made it to the V5. When you search for 480 Turbo, both cars are itemised. Well, at least that's what I think S/R stands for. My Turbo doesn't have 'S/R' on the V5, but some out there must...

When you search for "Volvo S/R" you get loads of models returned that have this mentioned. Bizarre.

Also, I think the 'two-tone' is mentioned multiple times but with a different name for each :

SPECIAL EDITION
LTD EDITION
SPECIAL EDIT

The 2017 data is out and I make it 319 for ALL 480's that are taxed. This does not include those that are SORN.

What makes me laugh are the cars that are qty '1' taxed. There is only ONE '480 S Auto' taxed... does the owner know they are fighting a cause!

Skip is Turbo Auto with Volvo sunroof but it does not appear as such on the V5. I did wonder what S/R stands for but I am not sure it stands for SunRoof. Maybe Super Reliable?

Well that would demonstrate a decent level of humor from Volvo...

Apparently it does stand for sunroof, according to this thread from a few years ago, in which Daniel links to this thread. Looks like it's a Volvo thing. We've also covered in the past how the descriptions on the V5 vary wildly. I think someone established that some of the Celebs were registered as standard cars, which might explain why they are 10 short. They are also claiming 353 GTs registered at the end of '94, which is odd given that only 250 were made.

Interesting statistics on 'howrareismycar.co.uk' as well, note the number of taxed cars:

I think some of the final cars (but not many) were actually labelled 'SE', not that I've ever seen one. It could be that they had a standard ES badge but something else on the V5. Perhaps that they were using up whatever was left in the parts bin to do a few specced-up cars. I think there was something about that in the Practical Classics article, but it's on my desk at work at the moment so I can't check...

I believe that there may have been an earlier GT. I bought a set of Vesa wheels from a chap breaking a GT and was surprised to see it was a black 1.7 when I went to collect. He was adamant that it hadn't been repainted and was a black GT on the log book.

The 2 litre GT was re designated as an SE according to the RAC but has anyone ever seen an SE other than on howmanyareleft ?

According to "How Many Left", there's only one 460 Turbo manual left - although that is one SORN - just like mine ;)

My 480ES 2.0 is a relatively common beast....

Take comfort from the thought that most people who decide to save a 480 will go for a GT, Celebration, Two Tone or turbo. The ES might have started off by far the most popular but will probably end up quite rare. ;)

same applies to Golf or any other maker.
