Petition for rear lights. Sign up !

Here you can talk about the joy owning a Volvo 480 brings. Non-technical discussions take place here, like what is the difference between an ES and a S version.

Ray of light !!! I'll be sending them a set of lights next week for them to stripe and try to reproduce.

Dear Baltasar,

THanks for your email. I really like your idea to get these rear lamps reproduced.

I have a good light supplier who made me some daf and volvo 300 lamps. Here you see a few samples of what he has made for me.

Afbeelding http://www.dafhobby.nl/upload/produkten/258901.jpg

It is a small German company with very short lines. So i can talk to the guy who does the producing directly.
I would like to show him a sample ( may be a damaged light) just to see if he can make these. And see if he can make a quotation for this item. What would you prefer? A complete lamp or maybe just the glass so that can be glued on the original cluster?

And what do you mean with the moulds? Do you have acces to the original moulds? That would make it much easier of course.

I really would like to help with this, It would be a real shame when there wont’be rear lights for these great cars in the future.

Kind regards,

That would be awesome, even just the lens parts. I really need a drivers side one so fingers crossed.

I´ve been absent for some time and i think i must give my contribution on this subject. Someone posted earlier on this topic about the difficulty on reproducing the color on the lenses ( using or not color light bulbs ).

Some years ago i contacted a Portuguese company in order to make reproductions of the lenses only. I still have the inner part and the lense is only moulded compound, wich i believe to be a more stiff kind of acrylic, with no color filters but only with a greyish/blackish tint on the surface. The coloured filters are already in the black part of the tail light. The only difficulty was the reflector bit in the center wich must be placed after the acrylic moulding. However, that company has closed and i lost that lense. If i remember correctly, the lense was simply glued to the black rear piece and was fairly easy to remove by means of a small cutting disc, like a dremel for example.

I think this is the way to go. With the old cluster, it´s only necessary the lense to refurbish it.

One of the things talked at the time was that, for that process to be near perfect, the lense would be glued on with the black part already mounted on the car because of minor plastic deflections.

I´ll try to get a picture to post here.

Good information JP.

I'm sending you a PM with Danny's contact so you can tell him all about it. The more information he has the better will be the outcome.

I will be sending him a couple of damaged lights that I have for him to stripe and try. Central reflector being glued on top wouldn't be a problem as long as the aesthetics are respected. I am sure most people would accept little deviations from the originals as long as they are alike and shinning.

Anyone with previous experience is welcome to share.

Looks like we're going to have new rear lights.

So Danny Muijtjens passed a set of lights I sent him to this German plastic manufacturer and they seem quite sure about doing it.

I pass copy of his today's mail:

HI Balthasar,

I already have received prices for the rear lights.
Just the glass including the reflector part ( in the middle) will be €95.-
Glass + rear part together is €211.75.

I need to order 100 sets for these prices. I have been thinking, i can do this but i first will make an order when i got a reservation and a depostit for 65 sets. Else the risk is to big for me.

It will be made from a very good quality plastic so it won’t fade like it did original.

All prices are including 21% vat.
These are prices for people who make a reservation. Later orders can be a bit more expensive.

When there is very much ask for the parts i can ask what qty 200 will cost, price will drop then.

Kind regards,

Danny Muijtjens

Having organised "group buys" previously; I'd recommend anyone reserving a set should be made to pay a none-refundable deposit (only refundable if the lights cannot be made).

Too many people say they want rear lights, only to let you down when the money is needed.

but very promising news.... What about fronts?

At the Volvo 480-Register, there is a substantial amount available to fund these initiatives. At € 211.75 a piece I can fund the needed 65 units left and right (€ 27,527.50 total) so production can be started. But I want to make proper arrangements first and I really want to see a working prototype before money is exchanged. I am awaiting a response from Dafhobby.

That is great news, and glad to hear you will see a sample first. Big relief for a lot of owners if it all goes ahead.

That! And that is the way to go Robert.

Danny's telling me also that he's going to need a good condition one. New or undamaged. To cast the perfect mold I guess. That's also for you Dutch guys to provide as I don't think no one else will source that out.

As said. When time comes, listing up will be the only way and people should understand this as a commitment to buy.

I have talked to Danny Muijtjens and there are a number of teething problems that have arisen.
First of all, it is unclear whether it possible at all to replace the smoke tinted outer layer of the lights.
Second, it is unclear whether the producer of the lights has fully understood the details of the design. There are two layers (three if you count the part that fits the bulbs) which need to be produced separately; the smoke tinted outer layer, the colour tinted (yellow, red and white) of the inner layer and the black rear end.
However, if it is possible to produce the lights at acceptable quality, I think I can work out the initial funding.
Robert.

I think this is great.

I have one very good rear lamp which cost a fortune that could be used to make moulds.

I would have just went for the lenses but can see the benefit of a complete unit.

Yes. Someone will have to provide them a good one when time comes.

I did already send him a set of right, left and center section that I bought to this Italian guy who tricked me (that's another story). So I have already put over 350€ on this. Time for someone else to step up.

Please keep contact with Robert to coordinate whether they will be needing that light or not.

Hi, I have just started getting more active in the Volvo 480 community after many years so haven't seen this until now.
Is there anything happening with this? I'm interested in minimum one set of rear lights.
I have started looking into doing some casting myself but it will not be easy or cheap.

This autumn I more or less ended up buying my 1988 Turbo for the new rear lights on it.

Unfortunately, no.

Rear light clusters consist of three parts (apart from the unit that holds the bulbs), a black back part with the reflectors, a coloured lens (orange, red and transparant) and a smoked front. This makes remanufacturing complicated and expensive.

There was a German manufacturer, the same as Dafhobby does business with, who was willing to make a prototype, but only when we waived our rights to the final product, and only when we were willing to churn out several thousands of Euro.

Joep tried to make one, but it wasn't possible to remanufacture them for less than 400 Euro each. Since people outside the small circle of enthusiasts tend to throw away their car if there is a substantial repair bill, that makes it isn't feasible to ask 800 for a set of rear light clusters. You could find a handful of enthusiasts, but you will be making a huge loss.

Sorry.
Robert.
