Motorbike sidecar with 480 front orange indicator light

Here you can talk about the joy owning a Volvo 480 brings. Non-technical discussions take place here, like what is the difference between an ES and a S version.

Motorbike sidecar with 480 front orange indicator light

Post by volcar16 » Sun Sep 24, 2017 2:12 pm

Waiting at the other side of a pedestrian crossing today was a 'typical looking' motorbike and sidecar, the kind you see all the time, I noticed the wedge shaped sidecar had a very neat square running light on the nearside (it was unlit). When I got closer I noticed it was a Volvo 480 DRL with the orange indicator! Can't find a picture of one on the internet. Wonder if a sidecar manufacturer used them for a while or whether the sidecar was a 'homemade' job. Will have to keep a look out for it again ... :D

Aha! That's the fella! This was a dark blue possibly black and obviously other hand for UK roads. Yes I wish they had a stash of lights too but I imagine when supplies dried up they just changed the moulding and made do with something else.
Nice to see the 480 and its parts had other uses! I haven't seen another 480 on the road in ages but at least I've seen a 480 DRL out and about... :hopping:

There has been a small Italian manufacturer who used actual Volvo 480 front lights. Can't remember which one, though.

Think Robert, think!

Though this has been previously discussed in other threads, how is the Dutch Club search of the rear lights molds? Last I read was that Hella? destroyed them back in 2005? Is that end confirmed?

So many cars will never see restoration due to the lack of rear lights...

Sadly they didn't. A couple of years ago someone came on here looking for replacements as the manufacturer of the sidecar couldn’t supply them.

The last lot has been produced in 2007. Hella does not respond to my inquiries.

From what I heard from someone who worked at NedCar in those days, the rear lights were actually produced by Valeo.

It's a one-off so don't expect a stock of DRL/indicator units

and there was company that took a TR7 (GRINNEL?) and re-clothed it in GRP and they used the front lenses, but maybe not the holders as you changed the front bulbs from INSIDE

I guess they have the same shortage :-(
