My Volvo 480 is now a Volvo 480.000!!

Here you can talk about the joy owning a Volvo 480 brings. Non-technical discussions take place here, like what is the difference between an ES and a S version.

My Volvo 480 is now a Volvo 480.000!!

Post by roberbob » Tue Aug 09, 2016 5:48 pm

In 1991 I decided to buy this beautiful Volvo regardless of the bad opinions about this car and when I moved to Spain in 1993 people were looking at it (and believe me, still happens) probably thinking "What the hell is this?". There were so few around that I felt like a rare animal.

It was my wedding car, decorated with flowers. You can imagine the bride getting in trying to reach the rear seats...
For many years I travelled all throughout Europe without a problem.
I still use it every day to go to work. Unfortunatly this year I had to call twice the car service due to electrical problems (solved). Not bad for being the last 25 years on the road.

But the most sensational thing is that now my Volvo 480S is a Volvo 480.000, kilometers of course. And the next target is half a million km.
Like an old lady has a few "wrinkles", mainly in the car interior. But it is still in fairly good general condition considering that the engine, the body and the interior are 100% original. Of course maintenance has always been accurate, replacing parts when needed.

Volvo 480, either you love it or you hate it. Long life to the 480.
I'd like to know if somebody had such a nice and long experience with this unique model.
I posted some pictures in member photos at the end of the list.

Congratulations on your spectacular achievement! It is stories like this that keep the legend alive and kicking!

Thanks for sharing your news :hopping: I hope my own old lady (currently 70K km) can get somewhere close to your fine example :)

At least in Spain the rust devil won't eat the 480, but did you manage to drive all 480.000 km with the same running gear? One of my 480's is at 335.000 now but needed another engine. The other is at 310.000 and has received another gearbox somewhere in the past.

Anyway, keep the 480 running :)

Very impressive. This has given me new hope that my 480 will live for many years to come with a mere 140,000 miles on the clock!

That's assuming of course that I continue to enjoy welding

The first person impressed by the mileage of the 480..it's me. I could never ever thought that I could get so far, but here we are. As all of you know about cars we need a bit of good luck when purchasing them and regarding this case I think I was lucky. Of course in Spain there are not so many rainy days like northern Europe, anyway I live by the seaside and this is not the best weather for the rust, but the car has no rust after 25 years!!
What can I say about the engine? Still is the original one, just need one kg. of oil every 4-5000 km., of course I don't drive like Hamilton..
I replaced three months ago the dashboard due to a problem with the computer and the rev counter. At the same time we repaired the odometer because it stopped working properly, so the actual mileage is higher than 483.000. The real one will be probably around 490.000.
Good luck to you and to your Volvo, there is still a long way ahead

Congratulations for the mileage of your 480 ! It looks really nice !

Volvo 480 can drive very long with proper maintenance (who said planned obsolescence ?). Mine is my daily driver and have 440 000 km with original engine. Hope I can reach 480 000 soon too !

Many thanks to all of you.

Now I reached 486.000 km. and next week we are going to have a birthday party: the 480S will be 25 years old, so here it can be considered a classic car getting a few advantages about tax and insurance. I think it is time to give it some "relax", but he target is not too far.
In the meantime the fuel pump died, I had many problems to find a suitable one here, in Spain there are not many cars like this..

Wow, 480,000!! That's a lot. Mine is at 150,000 miles. I wonder if you can get it to a million.

In Germany and in The Netherlands these parts are available new, you might try the Volvo aftermarket part suppliers on the Internet (Skandix, Polar Parts, etc)

Add your car to the Volvo High Mileage club: https://www.volvoclub.org.uk/hmc/index.php
480,000 km is approximately 300,000 miles so you can apply as Silver member :)
