I could lay my hands on a new Nissens radiator a while ago and it fits perfectly.
Remember there are two kinds of radiators in the Volvo 480, one for the non-airconditioned non-turbo cars, and one for the cars with airconditioning and/or turbo engine.

I'm with Brinkie on the radiator.
I needed one for my Turbo. Purchased a brand new Nissens one for about £100 delivere off of eBay. The ones for non turbo are cheaper.
Nice work on the rear loom as well. When I did mine all the wires were black. That was a joyous day. I have a new tailgate with loom to put on when I can be bothered.

Thanks for the recommendation, I had seen them but it is not a brand I know.

I am not really happy with the loom. The wires catch the seal and drips a bit, I checked it going through the car wash yesterday. Luckily there is a cover in the back for the dog so doesnt soak in to the carpet.
I have ordered a loom grommet for a land rover defender. I will work out where to bring it in from the inside and blank off the roof hole.
Need to source some hoses next.

I havent been doing much with the 480 recently, a mixture of being away with work and other cars needing attention.
I ordered a replacement exhaust from Germany, the rear can came on Saturday but not the centre and fitting kits. So waiting for the seller to resolve, the exhaust is a bit raspy an about due to be changed so best get the parts before it falls off.
We took the dogs to the beach today and it was all good, got a few admiring looks and a gentleman who told me he used to ride a horse along the beach.
I thought I would do an update on the rear lamps, the film is holding up well and I am still happy with it.
Still need to get the radiator and new hoses.

has anyone fitted a tail pipe finisher on their 480?
I have a new exhaust to fit and wouldnt mind fitting a finisher just wondering what others have done.

I've fitted on to mine - looks great from the back
not so good from the side as you can see the tailpipe going into it
Could have done with being longer, but would probably have vibrated on the bodywork.

I got the exhaust fitted today, will look at a tail finisher.
Whilst the car was on my lift I decided to change the oil and filter (10w40 and genuine filter). Also changed the HT leads which I had original struggled to fit, I was able to bend the bracket below the throttle to get enough space to remove them this time.
Quite a productive day, whilst the exhaust was off I painted behind it. My hand brake needed adjusted so while the paint was drying I got into it.
Did the 480 ever have anti squeal shims on the brake pads? mine have been squealing a bit recently, I had a play tonight but am not sure they will stay squeal free for long.

Not much fixing going on with the 480 since last update.
It has been getting out and about and well used, took it up to Glenclova for a climbing club AGM full of kit it did the 3 hrs each way without complaint.
I did take an extra passenger on the way home and noticed that the rear wheel disappears in to the arch but didn't rub. Will look at some new springs, I couldnt get them when I looked earlier in the year but they were a low priority.
I have a few little jobs to deal with, new wipers, drive belts and brake pads that dont squeal. I havent found any shims so have ordered 2 different pads, NOS AP lockheed and Ferodo along with some self adhesive pads for them, I havent tried them but will give them a go.
I have had no luck with finding a set of coolant hoses to have copied for silicone replacements. I wanted to get a set and change out the radiator at the same time but looks like I will have to take the car off the road for a few weeks now. I have 2 hoses but will hold off a few more weeks in case anything comes up.

Was a bit cold today but I got the brake pads changed out, I cant remember the brand of the ones I fitted but they werent the best. I found they were squealing a lot and lost a bit of there stopping power after a a bit of heavy breaking.
I opted for the Ferodo pads. The backs have a coating which I havent seen before but guess it is for anti squeal purposes. The AP lockheed pads are the same.
After a few months of use it was good to see that the brakes are still in good order. The stopping power was noticeably better and there is no squealing so I am very happy.
Whilst I was in there I gave the brake hose ferrules a spray with ACF-50, hopefully this will keep them rust free for years to come.
The wipers were replaced I fitted 21" Bosch wipers on the front and a 15" in the rear, it was a bit of a struggle getting the rear one off, I had to use the old clip as the one which came with the blade was a bit too narrow.

Another job that needed attention was the horn only worked if you pressed the bottom right hand corner.
It was straight forward removing the airbag. I cleaned the contacts but the left hand side wasn't working even after cleaning the contacts. I figured out that there was a wire missing so made one up and all is now good.
To avoid upsetting my neighbours by sounding the horn I rigged up a buzzer which worked a treat.
The only bitter part was when I broke the door pocket with my knee.

I forgot to ask.
I am trying to pin down why and stop the exhaust from banging below.
It is better since I replaced the system and fitted new mounts but I still get a bang every so often. I am thinking that the engine mounts might be the reason as there is a bit of movement on acceleration.
Any suggestions?

It is the small silencer after the cat which hits the cross member on the floor pan.
It does it more under acceleration or braking.
There is very little clearance, I got it best I could when I replace the system. It does have new rubber rings supporting the mid point.
I was wondering if it was the engine mounts needing replaced as that would certainly help.

if your MIDDLE exhaust with the two boxes is a two part then it might have been a wee bitty out when assembled, or even twisted at the rear. 9at rear axle)
usually the do-nuts stretch and then fall of so that the exhaust just scrapes on ground!!

Funnily the original exhaust was missing the doughnut rubbers and was unsupported. I sorted that out and the exhaust vibrated terribly against the body so I immediately removed them again.
I replaced the system from the cat back, inc new rubbers and it is much better but the exhaust does still hit the body now and then. I did rotate the the exhaust to get the best fit I could.
Was there ever an engine steady bar available?
I have opted for a set of Monroe (SP0531) rear springs, will be interested to see how these sit with a full car load.

I will need to look for that one.
Had an interesting bulb failure on one of the DLR lamps. The glass had parted from the base. It appears that the plastic has distorted where the bulb fits and the bayonet has broken on one side. I will repair it properly at some point.
It is a bit on the cold side to start looking at the radiator, I reckon there are a few delicate bits that need to come off the existing one so will get on it when the weather warms up a bit.

This was most likely caused by the wrong type of bulb being fitted at some point.
It should be a BAZ15D but often a BAY15D is fitted and the securing pins are in a different place.

Not sure, it is a possibility but the hold it self has no signs of heat though this could have been changed out over the years.
The drivers door doesnt seen to want to stay open and swing closed, I guess this is a common/age related issue. Is there a well known fix?
