Blinky 51/480

Here you can talk about the joy owning a Volvo 480 brings. Non-technical discussions take place here, like what is the difference between an ES and a S version.

I have got the hang of the diagnostic LED now so thought would see if there was any clues to help my idle problem.

2 codes are:

4-1-1 Throttle valve sensor: signal faulty
2-2-3 Idle speed regulating valve: no signal or signal faulty

Suppose 4-1-1 will be oil in the sensor I have read about perhaps.

I will check the wiring on the ICV, I did change this with a spare and it does appear to be working as when I pull the wiring plug off it alters the engine speed.

Any hints would be great.
I think if you pull the connector you have to clear the codes??
then try again?

The TPS code is very likely to be oil...

As Alan says, if you've disconnected the ICV you need to clear the codes, run the car again, then see what codes you have then...

Seeing as I get the car out a moth early I may as well do a few jobs.

I was going to buy a new throttle position sensor but decided to test mine first.

And as DC and Alan had said, full of oil. I cleaned out the oil and put the meter across it and does seem to be working. It now has a nice hole in it and idle is much more steady. Another great money saving tip from the forum, thanks.

Fault code now clear, other than 1-3-2 which is a duff battery. Didnt need the blinking LED to tell me that one :D

Pre-lock down I picked up another Sony head unit, I had been keeping an eye out for one with a tape deck and this was cheap due to condition being unkonwn. It dates from 1997 so is the sort of thing you would have upgraded to.

Gave it an intial test and it needs a little bit of work on the ejection mechanism but otherwise good, it works with the CD changer and the tape adapter for my ipod.

Going to try and refit the front spoiler now whilst I am in the zone.

Spoiler back on, just need to fix the broken fog lamp fixing and they can go back on too.

A couple of years ago I misplaced the little trim finisher that sits in the handbrake. I have seen reproduction items but not really worth buying. I have kept some plastic and cut a piece out, I will see if I have something with a bit of grain on it to make it look better.

Whilst i had the radio out I decided to swap out my VEM with a spare, the slide was better and I thought the illuminated green dot was broken.

Having swapped the units I have spotted a problem.

Is the little green dot supposed to illuminate?

Whilst I am at it I will investigate why the air conditioning isnt working.

The dot at the slider knob? Yes, it is illuminated by two T5 bulbs placed at both ends of the slider. These also illuminate all the labels (“A/C, etc.). It is possible to replace them by pulling off the knob and then carefully removing the front plastic panel (no need to open the dashboard).

That is a rare bit part indeed.

My bulbs are ok, just went out to have a look and the dot is faint.

I am sure I seen a photo of the slider with a bright dot, maybe it was a modified unit.

You may find that you need to remove and reseat the knob - could just be the green bit is hidden underneath the plastic

Am I the only one noticing that the blue/cold indicator at the temperature slider has swapped from right to left?

:D

I didn't notice until it was all back in the car and the cold was hot. Interesting level of detail from Volvo between the LHD and RHD cars.

The original will be going back in, I could of swapped the front panels but the one from the LHD car seem to work intermittently. Will solder it up and put it back in the spares box.

The slider isnt upside down, although I had a thought. The end of the plastic could be worn opaque and making the light dull. I have shaved the end and will see if that helps.

Would need to see another in the dark to compare.

I think I need some therapy.

When I was sorting out my VEM, I decided to check the vaccum was operating. There seemed to be a little leak so I change the o rings for the best ones I had. Maybe just me but I think there is more air on the footwell and screen now.

Re-gassed the air con and had it running but manually operation the relay in the VEM. All seems good ie the clutch and fan came on and the pipes got cool so just need to work out why it wont work when I press the button.

As expected, fix one thing break another. after having both the VEM and playing with them none of the green or red LEDS come on. I cannot see and thing obvious, I can put +v to they and the come on. Does anyone have a diagram for the VEM or any idea what I have done now?

An added bonus fault, I have a melted blower fuse in the holder and cant get the tag out :(

As for the knob: 3D-printing?
Or if you can form a mold, make one from epoxy resin.

I have a good knob so don't need one for now, they are available from skandix but £10 plus post it isnt a priority. It is easy enough to polish the plastic back to something good looking.

Managed to get the bit of fuse of, pig of a job.

The button LEDs is a strange one and I might have a clue why both units have stopped working.

On the LHD unit there was a jumper soldered on, I took this off when I re-soldered the board so it was a good working spare. This could be a fix for whatever the reason that the LEDS fail. I will have a go at it another day.

The joys of 480 ownership.

Does anyone have a step by step guide on the air con system?

I have managed a few jobs in the last week.

New door trim clips were a bit of a fail but have used some sticky back velcro which helps keep the infill panel against the door card.

Changed the drivers speaker for a new pioneer one, soldered old connectors on so the tweeter can be used.

Due to lock down restrictions being relaxed put my bike in the 480 and went for a 25mile ride. First time I have have a bike in the back. It is a big frame so was glad it fitted without any problems. Was nice to get out on it, 60th birthday for the bike and still going well.

Sometimes you get a nice surprise.

Tonight I was hunting for a missing bike mirror, I found it in a box wit a pair of fog lamps.

I think someone had asked me for the and either sold their car or didn't get to a meet. I will see if I can check back to find who it might have been but I do need to replace a broken one myself.

I have been thinking about this for a while and not because of the high value the 480 has attained.

I need to sell my celebration, ideally for me a bit of word of mouth on the community. Really not a fan of ebay and don't use Facebook.

The main reason is I have 7 cars (plus the spares lhd 480) and need to cut back.

I will still be driving and keeping it roadworthy, but if you know of anyone looking to get into 480 then send them my way.
