Blinky 51/480

Here you can talk about the joy owning a Volvo 480 brings. Non-technical discussions take place here, like what is the difference between an ES and a S version.

Disc sheilds? Bin em!

Slider pins need Red Rubber grease - nothing else! You could get something tiny like this, or just do a Jiff and grab one of these

what heating bodge did I miss?

The blower switch was by passed (for reasons unknown) sent the module on a wee holiday in hope that would fix the issue but doesnt appear to have. Will need to have better look once I have resolved the other bits.

I have worked with this type of caliper a few times.

Find that when the pins corrode it is best to get new ones. However I have had trouble in the trying to source them for slightly older cars and had to make do with cleaning the old ones up. The boots are shot but I may have some new ones that will fit in the garage.

The bit of rust I spotted looks like the front crash/bumper bar, looks like a bit of a mess. I guess these arent available?

Oh and the driveshaft is leaking where is bolts to the gear box. Will replace them when I have the brakes off.

Inner driveshaft gaitor. I have checked on Skandix and the part number they have is 3270526. My local parts place hasnt found it on their listings but it seems to be common to other cars. Can anyone point me in the right direction.

I usually get the universal stretch ones for the cv joint ends so will do that when the shafts off.

Just a thought, but as the box is similar to the renault range, have you looked to see how they compare? (5/9/11/19's etc)

I have thought about that but no idea what th dimensions are to start with.

There is a couple on ebay listed on ebay but dont want to buy the wrong part, was hoping maybe some one knows that it js the same as a specific renualt model.

I managed to source the brake discs and caliper from one of my local factor for a reasonable price, will ask them about the gaitor.

Was concerned about some of the ebay listings for brake parts, they look ok but I have read a lot about fake parts doing the rounds.

Took me a while but I figured out the wiring diagrams, they are a bit different from what I am used to.

Found no power at fuse 1 so swaped the relay and hey presto blower worked as expected.

I fired up the engine and it stopped. not sure why maybe just the relays n the vem are sticky. step in the right direction though.

Be careful with the diagrams, you have to match the build date of the car with the diagrams. They were changed every few model years and became stable in 1993.

I left the car whilst I got on with some other diy.

Before I packed up thought would see if there was still no blower.Although now I think about it the fuse was only 7.5 amp. I checked power but probing the terminal the fuse. need to recheck the one.

I wanted to confirm the relay I had was faulty and not just dirty contacts. the relay definitely is gubbed. However whilst looking at my dash board I noticed something different, the srs and abs lights now extinguish. so looks like a lot of bodgery for the sake of a relay....

I am pretty happy as it mean I can change the rear brakes and get an mot now.

***update*** it was the fuse, I should of changed it at the time. 25amp fitted and blower working all ok.

Keep meaning to ask about this.

The bonnet seems to have a pair of earth wires. What are they for?

Electrical interference suppression. The foam has a metal backside which should be earthed. Mine is missing and the radio reception is by far the worst I have experienced in any 480.

I also believe it’s because the bonnet is plastic and, for want of a better word, 'collects' static charge, the metal part of the foam then 'collects' the static and the wires ground it.

Found one dirt cheap on eBay, the postage is almost as much as the part itself! I wonder what the catch is...

possibly none

as not many folk need a rear shock for a 480 :-)

seem to have loads of positive feedback, maybe worth check physical address or 'citizens advice' for that location?

I am fine for shockers, I bought a set of four very soon after buying the car as I knew the rears were definitely shot.

Have been lucky with parts the set of shockers were about £80 delivered, rear calipers £76, my local factors raided the store and got me a set of front calipers, front and rear discs and pads for £200. So cant complain.

There is a lot of fake parts on ebay so I have been careful there, always worth a ring around the old motor factors to see what they can do. Another one was going to be almost twice the price though.

This was todays work in advance of the MoT. I now have a handbrake which is a nice change. Interesting the recon calliper has a plastic cap of the adjuster which should be handy for future adjustments. I couldnt get the metal cap off the old one, stuck solid.

I havent fitted the full set of brake calipers and discs. I am waiting for some new hoses to arrive but need to get the MoT sorted.

The underside needs a good clean up but appears solid.

A side project I was looking at today was the washer jets, I have a missing rear to replace but have an idea. Also a fellow forum member tackled the front jet and I think I have an alternative for that too should the day come. This one is almost identical to the original volvo item but I think the thread section is longer, The item I bought for the rear may be a better replacement as it has a shorter thread, although it is a different shape to the original.

Image

I fitted it on the rear just to give me a washer whilst I sort my other idea out. I did manage to drop the nut down the rear pillar so if anyone can tell me where it should appear it would save me trying to source a new one

Not pretty but functional.
