Re: newbie intro
I have also found washer gets that might do the trick. When it arrives I will take some pics It will be a slight different shape but I think that I can live with that or alter one to look original.

You can buy 480 wheel arches on the Skandix
website. Needless to say, much more expensive than
440 ones.
480 parts invariably come with Rolls Royce prices

Re: Blinky 51/480
I don't know how true it is, but the chaps at Lakes reckon that MK3 escort wings have the right arch profile for 480 rears.
If its true, that's £26 a panel....

Re: Blinky 51/480
I heard a similar story about Mk3 golf arches and used one on the old blue turbo a few years back, it was far from perfect but it worked. Looked reasonable in it's own right but you can tell it's different if you see it side by side with an original one. Be interested to see whether the escort ones are a better fit....
Honestly though, having done lots of welding of panels on cars over the years, I really would bite the bullet and pay the money for the correct ones unless those escort ones happen to be an uncannily good likeness. They'll be a lot easier to fit and a lot easier for you/bodyshop to finish well if they're right and welded in well. If not, it'll end up with loads of filler in it to get the finish, whereas the correct ones should just need the welded joint dressing back and a light skim of filler, not great lumps of the stuff.

Re: Blinky 51/480
I also heard the front wings from a 440/460 can be swopped for the opposite rear arches of a 480. They are however not a perfect swop.
1 the shape is very close. The 480 has a slight downturn but who would ever notice and if you changed both sides only a 480 nut that know what to look for would ever notice.
2 and 3 would need to be filled.
The green line shows the VERY rough line of the 480 arch but a good body shop could fix this I'm sure.

Re: Blinky 51/480
It is something to consider, I would only use a bit of the arch itself. If you avoid the vertical bit of the panel it does help the finish.
The inner wing is the harder to do and often needs more work. I am a long way off breaking out the plasma cutter but if a cheap set of 440/460 wings turn up I would but them to evaluate. But as I said plenty of other jobs to be getting on with first.
Blower bypass. apparently an autospark was paid cash to fix this??

Spot the fixes?
This will be going on a holiday this week.
Already have had some of the parts arrive, new horns - had a look under the bonnet and the one I can see is rotten which when it does emit a noise it sounds like a duck with laryngitis which isnt very safe.

Re: Blinky 51/480
That's not fudging the ABS light into the oil pressure light is it?
Re: Blinky 51/480
Think that is what it is.....
The brake rebuild could be getting more interesting now.

Re: Blinky 51/480
That is someone getting the car through the MOT. Someone did the same to my Merc (was SRS and Engine Management though). They have connected the SRS light (assuming you have the later dash or it would be the hazard warning light and would make no sence) with the ABS light so one of those items is faulty and had its circuit cut and wired in with the working circuit of the other so the lights come on and go out as they should.arthuy wrote:Think that is what it is.....

Re: Blinky 51/480
Having thought about it what I have said may not be right as there would be no need for the wire that disappears inside so it is more likely that both the SRS and ABS lights should be on, that both circuits have been cut and the wires disappearing in side are going somewhere that is making both the lights come on and go out.

Re: Blinky 51/480
I would devise some circuitry that switches the light on for a brief moment. Most of the electronics is already there. On the other hand, I'd rather have a working ABS.

Re: Blinky 51/480
I was reading / responding the previous post from a mobile connection in the train, I didn't load the images to save data. Now I am reading the thread again...
I hope I can save this instrument cluster, depends on how the circuit traces have been cut. I will try and change this mess into a proper timer circuit, but then again, better fix the faulty ABS!
If the problem is in the ABS pump, Orlando has a very good RHD MkIV ABS unit in his stockpile of 480 parts.
What the smeg?!? Looks like a class A botch job. Somebody had a cunning plan, apparently.

Re: Blinky 51/480
This is the washer jet I picked up. Will get a chance to try it maybe next week.
I can re-profile it to resemble the original.

Re: Blinky 51/480
Whilst my dashboard is away on its european tour I have been thinking aboutother jobs to do.
As a normal precaution I replace the timing belt and water pumps on all new purchases unless I have good evidence of it being done.
I am not 100% sure when this was done though it was within the last 6years. So will put them on the to do list. Any suggestions as to a source? are they renault source pumps? I can probably get a GATES belt.
Whilst I am in there is it worth whipping the head off to have a look, reseat the valves and change gaskets? not sure how difficult these heads are although I know newer renaults are a nightmare.
Found some unipart numbers anyone know if they are correct. my car has aircon if there is a difference on these cars.

Unless you need to take it apart, or suspect an issue, I'd leave it attached, unless wnat a load of extra work?arthuy wrote: Whilst I am in there is it worth whipping the head off to have a look, reseat the valves and change gaskets? not sure how difficult these heads are although I know newer renaults are a nightmare.
I found the head bolts VERY tight.
Ade did an excellent piece on his rebuild, he does have ALL the tools though
if ain't broke, don't fix it???

Re: Blinky 51/480
Gates have all you need to know when it comes to belts.
Re: Blinky 51/480
Fair enough about if it aint broke.
However I will give it some thought, I dont think a car with 130-150k will be in prime condition.
The belts on the to do list for def though.
Any idea about the correct waterpump for a 2.0 with a/c though?
