Blinky 51/480

Here you can talk about the joy owning a Volvo 480 brings. Non-technical discussions take place here, like what is the difference between an ES and a S version.

Fitted a new set of headlamp bulbs to the 480.

I had found the headlamps on one of my other cars were poor and a fellow forumite had posted some info on a bulb upgrade.

I bought a couple of sets of Osram Night Breaker (unlimited) H4 bulbs. So far I am quite impressed and they were only £13 a pair.

Tried to get a photo of the new lamps.

Definitely an improvement over the standard H4 bulbs.

Due to complaints from my other half, I need to sort out the boot lock.

It is soo much hassle to open the door and pull the lever apparently.

The key goes in but doesnt turn, could be a replacement lock in the past but how hard and how do you removed the barrel?

The boot lock still hasnt been looked at, will try and figure it out in the new year.

We havent used the car for a couple of day over Christmas and I was a bit apprehensive about, but I am pleased to say that I it started first turn of the key. Not bad considering the hard frost.

Glad to say that Volvo did a cracking job on the heaters, mine get toastie very quickly which is a bonus in this weather.

Changed out the rotor and distributor cap.

Well overdue by the look of it.

The metal had signs of erosion and pitting on both the cap and the rotor, usually I keep the old parts for spares but I think that these are fit of the bin.

So I this time last year I was an aspiring 480 owner and now I have 2, one left hand drive and one right hand drive in the same colour.

I wasnt really in the market for a spares car but this one is the same model as my own.

I have already robbed a few parts for Blinky, the boot release lever and bonnet release lever plastic. The rear screen washer is intact so this will be getting swapped over, worth getting the car just for these bits. :D

Just a plan for now but I fancy deconstructing the body panels especially the rear quarter panels, these ones have had some filler and paint but could make excellent repair panels with a bit of work of the vehicle.

Manage get a few bits of my spares car today.

The door glass seals were better than mine so they have been swapped. Also the rear plastic trim on my car had 2 extra speakers and some clips were missing so I wanted to replace so whilst I was in there I took the boot lock out, stripped cleaned and greased so now works a treat.

My drivers door pocket had broken and I found a decent on in the spare car so got that fitted. My door stay does work and I found the spring thing floating about. I guess the mounted bolts are welded to the door and have broken free. Will need to look at welding it back on at somepoint.

Also topped up the Aircon gas, I suspect that when the timing belt was last done they let the gas out. So far no leaks.

When I trial fitted the load cover it was filthy so I gave that a wash too.

Forgot to ask, My rev counter has started to go intermittent.

Is there a sensor or wiring that usually goes?

Does anyone have a cd changer mounted under a seat? I am thinking about relocating mine. Do you need brackets or is there something on the seat frame that will accommodate it?

Usually it's either a broken soldering or an interrupted circuit trace on the main board of the instrument cluster (or both...)

Thanks Robert,

I will have a look, at least I have a spare dashboard I can use to test/compare. Does the signal come via the ECU or is there another pick up which goes direct to the rev counter?

I have been snowed under the last few weeks and have driven my car for the first time in a couple of weeks.

The interior light fell off, probably due to the heat. I could have used a could of washers to repair but I had one on the spares care so was a good excuse to get down to see the what else I could get off.

Manage to get a good seat belt extension, interior light, rear washer jet, nose cone, and a few odds.

I took the front bumper off to liberate the front foglamps. I used a drop of oil from the dip stick on the threads of the bumper bolts as I didnt have any WD40 to hand. All 4 bolts came off easily and i was very pleased how solid the bar is, the one on my car is in need of a repair so will get this a lick of paint. Hopefully the rear will be in a similar condition.

Managed to get round to the MOT today and it passed ok.

I do as a matter of urgency need to sort the power steering pipes out. Has anyone had some made up? or know a supplier?

I reckon mine will break when I try to remove them.

Are the left and right hand drive PAS hoses the same? I might be missing something in the parts book.

I will probably be able to get the pipes off the LHD car and have them made up locally but dont want to waste time if they are completely different. I would think that they are similar but with a longer rubber ?

They'd be the same? (but different)

LHD will be longer across to the point where they go onto the rack (next to the column)

so I guess I'll have to get mine made up. if you are using them from the spares car :( .

bloke I have a beer with reckons best option is to go flexible from rack to return (ie only need a hose tail at rack)

then flexible ALL the way from rack to rigid pipe at front of engine (well that's the plan) probably with smaller dameter line and go over top of bellows and sweep back in, using right angle fitting to point hose out to side.

numerous cable ties/fittings to keep in place

mine are also 'very rusty' :(

Thanks Alan,

What my plan is if they are the same is to take them off and get a new set or 2 made up at a place locally to me. I think I have a better chance of getting the LHD ones off as mine are crusty and wouldn't survive removal.

I will keep you posted.

Just in case, of part 16 is beyond repair it can be by-passed without side effect. Mine was just too rusty to be saved.

Part 16 is a very crude oil cooler.

They use similar ones on the early 850's - Not saying they're transplant-able, but you could use any sort of oil cooler arrangement to replace it.

Out of Curiosity, how easy it is to remove the steering rack?

It might need to come out if my pipe fittings are stuck. I have also seen new ones arent that expensive.
