Pop up headlights help please

Here you can talk about the joy owning a Volvo 480 brings. Non-technical discussions take place here, like what is the difference between an ES and a S version.

Pop up headlights help please

Post by Tom480GT » Thu Mar 10, 2016 12:22 pm

Hi all

I had to change a day running bulb, all was fine...

Headlights went back down as they should have done afterwards

Now they won't go back up, fuses under dash all ok, what should I be looking at next?

Is the bonnet shut (or does the switch on the bonnet think it is shut?)?

If open, pop-ups are disabled for safety.

If I remember rightly it is in the middle with the rest of the mechanism.

aye a wee flappy paddle that you can see when looking down into bonnet catch on slam panel. I usually just stick the pocket knife into the catch when working on the lights with the bonnet open so I can check all operates as planned, sodding DLR / side light connections!

I'll take a chance that I don't manage to operate the switch and have fingers in crush zone :D

Ok....

So had a fiddle with Toggle switch.. Can hear it clicking so assume it's ok?

What's next? Are there any relays involved with the pop up head lights?
:? :?

had similar problem after changing a day running bulb. Changed it for another one and the popups worked again. No idea why!! Worth a try?
Maybe I moved something behind the lights unit, I don't know.

There is a relay - tall one in the relay box - but usually that fails one light at a time.

I'd also suggest trying a different DRL bulb in and seeing if that makes a difference. Have you used a 21/4W bulb? Is it a genuine Volvo one?

DRLs do not affect pop-up headlights in any way. Different circuits.

Could indeed be a faulty switch or a faulty relays. A good test is to raise to popups by hand (turning the white knob at the end of the motor) and then close the hood. Switch the lights on and off, and see what happens. If nothing happens at all, either the hood switch is broken or there is a power problem to the relay and/or the motors itself. If they go down and never go up again, there is a problem in the relay.

Got there in the end....

After a lot of checking, found a break in the wire by the bonnet toggle switch.
All sorted now :D

Not sure what to believe here - I've just replaced DRL bulbs with LED but found that these interfere with the operation of the pop up lights. At first the pop ups wouldn't go up, following installation of the LEDs, which dimmed when the headlights were switched on. Headlights popped up following removal of one LED with the other still in situ and working fine, and then up and down depending upon what position the second LED was inserted. I haven't worked out what is going on yet, or a way to make them work all together.

On a previous 480 some years ago I ended up driving the DRL using a separate 12v feed. For next week's impending MOT I think I'll go with manually setting headlights up and running the DRL in the current set up.

LED DRL are very good by the way - cool running and nice and bright.
