Drivers door lock Gremlin... Any ideas?

Here you can talk about the joy owning a Volvo 480 brings. Non-technical discussions take place here, like what is the difference between an ES and a S version.

Drivers door lock Gremlin... Any ideas?

Post by Tom480GT » Mon Feb 01, 2016 7:38 pm

Hi all.

My drivers side door lock has developed a Gremlin...
When you unlock the car the red tab sticks out, but then goes back in...
Passenger door unlocks as it should.
To get in the drivers door you have to unlock & hold the key in unlock position & pull handle up,
Then the red tab will stay out.
Locks as it should do.
Not the end of the world, but annoying! :x
Any ideas?

I've had this the opposite way on the passenger door: it would not always unlock, the red pin would stay in. A mechanical issue. So maybe it's just not holding it's position. If your door was locking again, the passenger door would have been locked also.

That bit of trim with the red indicator on pops off pretty easily. I've never experienced your problem, but would try removing the triangular trim and seeing if this is in some way restricting movement.

Good luck.

Had a look inside the lock & nothing looks obviously wrong.
Gave it a squirt of WD40 while I was there.
Can only guess something has slight wear.
can I replace the lock somehow & still have the original key working?

I think glasgowjim has the know-how to recode the locks; I don't.

I have a leaves for inside (all the gear: no idea!) but hopefully you can just transfer your barrel if tha bit is ok. Dead easy to change entire lock assembly, from what I remember.
