Gearboxes...

Here you can talk about the joy owning a Volvo 480 brings. Non-technical discussions take place here, like what is the difference between an ES and a S version.

Gearboxes...

Post by doingitsideways » Thu Oct 22, 2015 8:08 am

So, as I'm converting to a manual 'box on the Turbo...

I have a couple of 'boxes from B20Fs, as far as I can tell, the ratios are the same.

But is the Turbo gearbox any stronger, or is that just a myth?

I'm going to be gunning for 200bhp, so don't want to be breaking gearboxes every time I dump the clutch! :(

You and me both mate! The only difference I know about is the clutch is 215 mm diameter on the later turbos, whereas the B20F is 210 mm

Valeo kit part numbers:

Turbo 215 mm clutch 801307
B20F 210 mm clutch 801616

Gear ratios are the same as you said according to the Club site & other sources

That said though, didn't the 2 lite use an M60 box and the turbo M59..?

Yeah, mine are badged as M60s.

A bit more digging has shown up that perhaps the bearings are stronger on the Turbo boxes?

Hmm...

Lots of myths about. Fact is, around 1990 the M54-373E box was replaced by M59-373E on the Turbo. From what I heard, this gearbox is better in terms of reliability. In later years, the clutches were different, too. Specially tailored for the 480 Turbo, so bloody expensive, if you can find them at all!

Power doesn't really break the gearboxes, the extra torque at low rpms is what usually kills them. That, or they will die of oil starvation if you don't watch the oil level regularly (they tend to leak through the gear shafts and the selector seals).

Forget about the M60-373E, the 1st and 2nd gear ratios are different to suit the 2.0 naturally aspirated engine, and they will break even sooner than the M59.

brinkie is right,

gear ratios on 1 and 2 are different, plus you can use a bigger clutch, which will suit your plan in terms of power far better. Even then you will have a problem finding a strong enough clutch. Guess a sintered metal clutch is your best chance.

You could try and look into a Renault JC5 gearbox from a Renault Mégane Diesel (F8Q-engine). That engine is spec'd at 200 Nm @ 2000 rpm, so the gearbox will be able to at least handle that amount of torque. The following gearboxes share the same final ratio (3.733:1) with the M59/M60, though I have no information about an electronic speed sensor:

JC5-072
JC5-103
JC5-109

See all JC5 gear ratios here: http://www.volvohowto.com/jc5-jb3-jb5-j ... lications/

That said, what are you expecting to achieve with 200+ bhp on a front wheel drive car without traction control? Lots of tire smoke?
