SRS light and MOT

Here you can talk about the joy owning a Volvo 480 brings. Non-technical discussions take place here, like what is the difference between an ES and a S version.

SRS light and MOT

Post by Rachel » Tue Sep 15, 2015 2:34 pm

Hello everyone.

My SRS light is lit and doesn't go off due to, if think, the fact that the passenger side pretensioner has been fired at some point. This is going to cause an issue with MOT so I need to get it sorted. If I replaced the fired pretensioner will this reset the light or does something else have to be reset?? I guess also it could be the battery for the system???

Thank you for any help.

just remove the bulb from the SRS icon on the dash.

nope, the ABS light MUST come on then go off, for MoT the SRS light just 'must not indicate a fault'

but if the pre-tensioners have fired you WILL need to re-set them as they WILL be a fail. (although min ecame with triggered unit AND a 2 week old MoT (tho burnt oil at such a rate that I doubt they actually tested it!!

I did post a comment see her on page from MoT test procedure

there is NO requirement within the MoT for the light to be 'on' and then 'off', only that it does not illuminate
(for the ABS then it MUST come on, then go off . . . . . not sure why they are not treated in the same way? )

As far as I remember the pre tensioner aren't wired into the srs system and are mechanically activated.
I'd get the system checked to make sure they isn't a morecserious problem. You don't want the airbag going off on its own. Or not going off when it needs to (airbags are only guaranteed for 10 years BTW)

But if you need to get it through an mot then just pull the bulb.

Ok, that's much clearer - thank you very much. Typical how the only bulb you'd like to go is the one that won't!!
I will get the system checked.
The fired pretensioner has never been mentioned in the mot. Can you re set them or do they to be replaced??

The pretensioner should be capable of being reset but does need a significant amount of force. With pretensioners I just lock them off . If that is what stands between me and eternity in a crash then I am doomed anyway as even though its a volvo it is early 80's safety technology.

yep the mechanical ones can be 're-set' needs a lot of force and some careful moving of the wee lock-blocks to prevent re-triggering when assembly!

as Jim says there isa wee red button to turn to stop it going off.

PS I thought some later units WERE electric/'explosive' type?

As far as i know there are only 2 type of seat belt buckle. the pre tensioner type and the ones without.
The drivers side do have the electrical connector for the seat belt warning light on the dash though.

It could be that some later cars were fitted with both the LDH and RHD market wired ones to make things simpler. But again i don't know.

Have you tried resetting the light with the CEM diagnostic module under the bonnet?

After being stuck with the the SRS light for ages, I managed to solder a new wire into the diagnostic tool with a crimp on other end of it. When I checked the memory I got a fault saying the steering wheel module was open circuit, which I was sure it wasn't as I've already had the wheel off and checked the connection. I cleared the memory with the tool, and success! the SRS light has gone out and hasn't come back on since! :D
