My kingdom for a Valve, or 8 in this case.....

Here you can talk about the joy owning a Volvo 480 brings. Non-technical discussions take place here, like what is the difference between an ES and a S version.

My kingdom for a Valve, or 8 in this case.....

Post by rhigga » Thu May 21, 2015 5:24 pm

There i am driving along enjoying the ride as usual when suddenly, knock knock knock knock etc. arggg...,head for home
and 600 yards later....dead engine.....on investigation the cam belt had gone.,however..I believe this to be a symptom not
the cause of my engines demise. Perhaps the tensioner had failed..god knows. Anyhow, fact is I now have 3 choices,

1. Scrap immaculate car, with shiny new £450 custom fitted exhaust not 2 weeks old...cant even give it a thought as yet...
2. Buy head-gasket set, cam belt kit, 8 new valves ( assuming all bent ) etc.
3. Find a second hand cylinder head....

First problem ive found is finding 8 New valves for the B18ft engine.........no one seems to stock them anymore ..can anyone
point me in a suitable direction.....pleassssssseeeee .... Car is a 1992 Turbo Auto....

Big engine failure is one of the worst nightmares you can have and I feel sorry for you.

First you need to investigate what exactly happened and what the damage is.

You wrote first you had the knock knock sound but the engine was still running. You had better turned it off immediately b.t.w.
Then shortly after the knocking the engine went dead. You found the cam belt was gone. Are you sure you are talking about the cam belt, not the auxiliary belt?
Without the cam belt your engine won't run at all. With a blown gasket you could have made those last few yards.

If your cam belt did snap and your valves are bent it is possible more damage is done to the engine. I think then the least expensive option is finding a replacement engine. If the damage is only to the valves then find a cylinder head and fit that together with an all new cam belt assembly.

I hope for you it's 'only' a broken auxiliary belt and a blown gasket.

Many thanks for your feedback Van.....I am unfortunately not very mechanical,it was the rac chap who discovered the cam belt
had snapped. The belt is on the left of the engine shielded by a cover which he unbolted to check....Your right though, i need to investigate
what damage there is first so i guess ill have to pay someone to take the head off .....dont suppose anyone has a spare head lying around...

I hope this doesn't sound uncharitable but you are on borrowed time with an autobox linked to a uprated engine. That will go bang next I would have thought.

The ZF4HP can hardly handle the power of the standard turbo especially with nearly every auto box having oil in that is well past its best.

sounds to me like the belt started to go. Stretched so the timing went out giving the knocking noise as the engine detonates and the valves hit the pistons. Then it snapped.
Could even need new pistons. Defo need to get the head off to see what the damage is.
There are always ample warnings and there are always subtle signs,
And you would have seen them coming but we gave you too much time.

Lol, mine's gonna explode in spectacular fashion soon. :boom:
Already Richmodded, but with crap tyres to it just spins the torque away.
Soon to have a T3 bolted to the side and grippy Yoko tyres, in a 460 too so heavier :D

@Rhigga, sorry to hear of your woes.
I think it would prob best to whip the head off and have a good poke around.
If all your pistons have survived, then source a second hand head and give it a whirl :)

That's very good of you Kev :)

Why not stick a thread up listing what you have?
I'm sure Jim won't mind.
