First time Volvo owner

Here you can talk about the joy owning a Volvo 480 brings. Non-technical discussions take place here, like what is the difference between an ES and a S version.

First time Volvo owner

Post by cr9ig » Fri Oct 18, 2013 7:54 pm

:D Hi folks,
I decided to buy myself a run around for work as I'd sold the family car and bought a Lupo to teach the missus to drive but after 3 months of her avoiding taking a single lesson and me pootering around in a car that makes the local teenagers cringe when they see a grown man driving around in a car that is smaller than the pram my mum pushed me around in the 70's, I'd had enough!
I picked up my 480 celebration (033) yesterday, it's got 74, 000 on the clock and 6 months MOT & tax, I'm very happy with it as I've always fancied one butnever got round to it. :hopping:
It drives very well except the exhaust downpipe needs replaced, neither of the pop ups work and the front brakes needs replaced.
I enjoy working on cars but the thought of crawling about snapping exhaust bolts and likely putting my back out over a weekend means I'll be putting it to Kwik fit to give them the hassle. Unless anybody knows of a descent place in the Aberdeen area?
Thanks toall the information on here I have got the passenger side pop up working (blown fuse & running light bulb) and checked the motor on the right side by checking the realy pins, will try the local dealer tomorrow for a relay.
As for the brakes, I fancy buying upgraded pads & discs but have realised its just solud discs. Can anybody tell me which models have vented discs? And would I only need the calipers to change over or are the hubs different too?

Thanks everybody in advance any helps greatly appreciated

Hi fella, welcome to the forum!!

One of the members on here is from up your way - Nick_ovlov, he might know of a decent garage. He did have Celebration #63 but I think sold on now

Roge_1 is also from Aberdeen.

He doesn't really come on here very often though now... Not since I bought his Celebration off him anyway! ;)

Hmm... Strange that there seems to be an abnormally strong concentration of Celebrations in Aberdeen. There was Nick's, mine and now yours. Believe me, that is extraordinary!

Maybe you have Nick's old one. Post some pics, we may be able to tell.

Good luck with it :)

Hi James & Steve,
Thanks for the info guys, I've done around during 200 miles over the last two days and the exhaust has gotten worse so I have decided to take it to Kwik Fit in the morning, it'll be nice to see how it actually drives.
The car belonged to an old boy for the last nine years who's family have made him give up driving grudgingly! Judging by the few bits of paper work from services and repairs he's averaged about 4000 miles a year as it was a second day car used for the trips to and from the golf course.
Sorry I'm not sure how to post pictures yet!

You cant post photos until you have 10 posts , I also got a celeb a few years ago from Aberdeen but it was ultimately for a spares car.

I am told there is a guy with the user name Khe Sanh on the VOC forum in your area. I'm not sure if he has a business but worth an ask! I can send him a message if you like?

No idea why there are so many Aberdonian Celebs. I can imagine a secret owners club up there all sat round talking Doric, "fit like?", planning to collect all of the 480s in the UK. Jim runs the Glaswegian branch of this secret society but his accent is a bit more 'Still Game' ("hee-haw") easier to understand :D

Hi Jamesy,
thanks but I've just got back from Kwik Fit, exhaust is fitted and immediately has made a difference all round although the lambda sensor light is on, hopefully a proper run to work and back tomorrow will sort it.
I'm not a doric speaker myself, I'm Glaswegian but been here 12 years and still need to get the locals to repeat themselves 3 or 4 times before I understand them!

I drove in this morning and it stayed on all the way in, it had been intermittent prior to the new downpipe and Lambda sensor and I assumed it had been flashing up because of the exhaust blowing so badly.
I'm going to take it home this evening & disconnect the battery to clear out any fault codes and see if it returns on the way into work again tomorrow morning.

I've not had the opportunity to disconnect the battery yet as I've been using the car the last couple of evening (I could have used the Lupo :( but that just defies the point of having the Volvo)
However on the way into work this morning the Lambda light went off, I've no idea when it happened but only noticed it as I was pulling up outside, with any luck that'll be it off permanently.
I'll update if it re-appears.
The ABS light is on nearly all the time now but I'm not bothered about that as the brakes need a bit of an overhaul and am still thinking about what I'll do with them (Solid to Vented)

I decided to take the pop up relay apart earlier today and discovered a break in one of the circuits. I did a quick bit of soldering and put it back in the car, hey presto the lights are working fully again. :hopping:
10 minutes later Volvo called to tell me the one I ordered was now in stock, think I'll keep it as an emergency spare.

use your fault code reader to tell you the fault if any in your abs

Fault Codes Retrieval

1. Open the diagnostic system's box cover and place the test cable mounted on the side of the box into an appropriate socket.
2. Turn the ignition ON to key position II without starting the engine. Wait about ten seconds.
3. Press the button once and hold it for more than one but less than three seconds.
4. The LED lamp will flash in successive series of three digits followed by a three-second pause. If there are no fault codes stored, it will flash 1-1-1 indicating the system being tested is operating correctly.
5. Count the successive flashes and record the fault code.
6. Press the button again, as described above.
7. Record the fault code. If it is the same as the previous one, then no additional codes are stored. Repeat until all the codes stored are retrieved (often a maximum of three).
8. Turn the ignition OFF and remove the test cable from a socket.

Erasing Fault Codes

1. Repeat step 1 and read all the fault codes again. Do not turn the ignition OFF after read-out.
2. Press and hold the button for more than five seconds, then release it.
3. When the LED lights, press the button again for more than five seconds and release it. When the LED goes off, the memory is cleared.
4. Test that memory is cleared by performing step 1. Code 1-1-1 should be returned.
Note: erasing fault codes on the ABS socket will cause the ABS control to be lit. It will turn off after a test-drive with speed of more than 40 km/h.

Sockets Description

1 – alarm and remote locking system,
2 – fuel system,
3 – ABS,
6 – cruise control,
7 – SRS (airbag).

Hints

Before assuming a fault in any of the systems tested, try to erase fault codes as described above. In my case, open circuit in ABS wiring has initially been signalled with codes 122, 152, 312 and 322. After erasing and performing a test-drive, only code 312 was signalled.

At first, read the codes when the engine is completely cold. Then, go for a longer test-drive and read them all again while the engine is still hot. Some codes (especially these related to lambda-sensor) tend to appear only while the vehicle is driven and short time afterwards.

Hi Gents,
I went to the local Volvo dealer on Saturday to collect the headlamp motor relay that I'd ordered.
I was given a small 4 pin relay, I told the partsman that this was not the relay that I wanted (I want the tall one), he tells me that this is the only Headlamp motor relay.
I went out to the car removed the tall relay and gave it to him, he took the details and I could tell he was struggling so said he could call me once he had found it.
He called me later on that afternoon and tells me that the relay is no longer stocked by Volvo, has anybody else been told this?
It's not a problem as I have repaired the relay currently in the car but it has been repaired previous to that and will almost certainly fail eventually, does anybody know if there is another source for these or an altenative?

Thanks
