Hello all, from Galway, Ireland

Here you can talk about the joy owning a Volvo 480 brings. Non-technical discussions take place here, like what is the difference between an ES and a S version.

Hello all, from Galway, Ireland

Post by wkd rwd » Sun Nov 18, 2012 8:32 pm

Hello folks, just joined up today
Have wanted a 480 since i first saw one about 20 years ago
I finally got one at the weekend
a slightly tatty 1995 2litre one which i paid a little but too much for but they just aren't around over here anymore, wanted to get one before they've completely disappeared
Looking forward to some quality reading here on the site and finding out how to fix a few of the electrical problems it has

I would put up pics but the site isnt allowing me to right now

Congrats and welcome to the site. I'm not sure what the restrictions are with putting up photos but if you want to pm me I can throw some up for you.

If you don't mind me asking, was the 480 you bought the silver one that was advertised on donedeal?

I don't have a 480 at the moment but I have had a few, you've joined a pretty exclusive club (in Ireland at least) and I really hope you enjoy the experience.

Best of luck :)

Funnily enough I enquired about that car myself a few months ago. I would love to have had a look at it but it was too far away from me! It looks like a lovely car, nice reg too.

They can be tricky cars at times but then they all are. You've got a great resource here in this website, people will go out of there way to help you and there is already so much information there. How is the car driving? Is it anywhere near NCT level yet?

Let me know if you want me to throw up those pics.

no, i doubt it'll see another NCT, got quite a bit wrong, mostly electrical, a lot of lights on the dash, no rebound in front suspension, headlights stuck on fullbeam, needs 4 tyres asap, exhaust rotten.
I'll put a few quid into it over the next few months and try to get it through but i think it'll be in vain
I probably should have left it behind me, been around cars all my life, i knew better but like i said, i always wanted one and you know yourself how scarse they are on the roads here

Yeah you're right, I saw one in Dublin last week but before that I'd say I haven't seen one on the road for 2 or 3 years.

The headlights could be a relay issue, or a fuse? You never know it might not be as bad as it seems and most parts can be sourced on here without too much trouble. I know my old one is lying up in Waterford and they guy is selling it for parts if you need any. There's another fella in Navan too with one.

Shame it was left lying up for so long as it used to belong to an old woman who minded it like a baby up until she sold it to yer man a few years back, if its the same one I'm thinking of.

Headlights stuck on full beam can be either the stalk (thats where I would look first) or the dip dim relay .

second hand parts of these are readily available at low cost through the forum  ;) and being not too heavy the postal charges are not too expensive.

Give us a list of the problems and the forum members will be able to advise on the likely problems ......

when you have 10 posts you will be able to post up pictures.

Good to hear, there will be another 480 back on Irish roads.
I seen the ad on donedeal and it looks very smart in that colour

Well....
After a week of ownership, all is not as bad as first appeared

Suspension is fine, the problem there was that the previous owner had all 4 tyres inflated to 66psi, the APE!!
Headlights are fine, was a problem with switch, cured now
all missing relays and fuses were put back where they should be,
and a new (old) radio smartens up the dash

Well pleased with it

Only problem left to cure is the infocentre which only works when it wants to
Would be nice to know how much petrol i have left though

Amazing the difference a new set of rims can make to a car...
