Just bought a Celeb, few questions

Here you can talk about the joy owning a Volvo 480 brings. Non-technical discussions take place here, like what is the difference between an ES and a S version.

Just bought a Celeb, few questions

Post by doingitsideways » Tue Jun 05, 2012 9:35 am

Morning all :)

Well, I've just bought a Celebration, no.269... The one advertised on here by Roge1.

Have to say that I'm well pleased with the car, it's an absolute blast to drive compared to any other Volvo I've owned (I've had many, as anyone on VOC will probably know!) I've had loads of fast Fords in my time too, and can say it's as much fun as them, so happy days!! :D

Roger has put a great deal of work into it, so thankfully many of the usual 480 jobs have been done for me already.

I'm still getting a feel for the old girl, but I've noticed a couple of little niggles:

Firstly, the info center... I know this is going to end up hurting, but when started from cold it refuses to operate for about 5 minutes, if started again while the engine is still warm it works fine and does it's usual thing with showing oil-ok, then range, then back to wherever the switch is set.

So... Does this presumably mean that it's on it's way out and pretty soon I'll have no fuel guage??

Next, the gates between 1st and 3rd seem very close, so much so that I've ended up trying to pull away from the lights in 3rd a couple of times now, looking a right spanner in the process! :(

Is this normal? or are there some bushes etc on the linkage that get worn??

Roger fitted a guage pod below the radio, with battery and oil pressure guages... The battery one works fine, but the oil pressure goes straight to the top as soon as the ignition is turned on.

I think I remember reading somewhere that the guages from a 1.7 are different, do you think that this could be the case, or a faulty sender or something?

That's about it for now, but I'm sure there'll be more in due course! ;)

Hopefully I'll be here for some time yet!

Cheers, Steve

The info-center, when it comes alive after a cold start, is it showing the "post" (power on self test) or the set reading.
My guess though would be a bad connection. I've had this not always but it did appear from time to time and since I have unplugged the dash to fix the faulty halogen bulb, it has not occurred.
Congrats and have fun with your car!

Hi, I think it's doing the self test, I first noticed it yesterday, then saw it self test after about 5 mins of running.

Today though I only saw it once it had lit up, could have missed the self test.

Cheers,

Steve

OI-OI NICK!!

Yeah, once I was there and chatting to Roger, I remembered about you knocking aboot (did you hear the accent then? lol)

Shame really, would have been good to meet up.

Stick the info center to one side for me, I might have it off you!

Is it normal for them to "forget" your average MPG when you switch off the ignition??

Average should be kept until reset or the battery is disconnected.

Welcome!

The infocentre issue will probably be a loose connection as mentioned above. The oil pressure guage I guess will need a sender adding instead of oil pressure switch-have a look at what you see to the bottom left of the oil filter.

Thanks, I'll have a look when I next get a chance.

Anyone got a spare sender knocking about??
