Alternators

Can anyone tell me why cars with AC need a more powerful alternator? Standard is 70amps but AC cars require 110 amps?
The AC pump in driven from the crank, so what takes all this extra power? I mean 40 amps is a hell of a lot!!
Ford Probe 24v V6
Ford Mondeo 16v
but no longer a 480 owner
